COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In contrast to all the others, the Orval Trappist brewery makes only one beer for the general public. It has an intensely aromatic and dry character. Between the first and second fermentations there is also an additional dry-hopping process. Through this the beer acquires its pronounced hoppy aroma and extra dry taste.

Re-rate on Orval Appreciation Day 2011. Hazy orange golden with a big and fluffy head if poured right. This head disappears a bit quickly though. The aroma never gets boring. Grass, grapefruit, fresh wood, leather, barnyard, spice notes and herbal notes. Deliciously dry and bitter, with complex flavour notes of fruit, herbs and funk. The one I had today also had a bit of caramel sweetness. Nice touch.

Slightly hazy, medium amber, big white head. Spicy, malty nose, lots of hops and brett, earth, barnyard, lemon peel, dried fruits. Dry, medium bodied, medium to hig bitterness, lively carbonation. Malty, spicy, hoppy taste, a distinguished acidic brett note, earth, dried fruits, hay. Long, tart, bitter finish. Complex. (2011-02-21)

bottle-bottled on 9/2008 and consumed 3/2011; very hazy brown on lees with large tan head; aroma-yeast, alcohol, caramel, herbal ; taste-light sweetness , medium bitterness with heavy carbonation, diluted finish. I wasn’t that impressed-but I think I might need a fresher batch as I really wasn’t impressed with the hops presence.

Bottle at Patricks. Pours cloudy amber with offwhite head. Aroma, in this particular example, was a mix of the belgian yeast and basement with some american hops thrown in for good measure. Light sweet, light bitter, very light sour. Medium body, thin, lively carbonation. 20110310

Always a favorite, looking forward to my next meeting with this one.

Bottle to chalice (Re-rate, will have to go back to the backlog to see how this one compares). Hazy dark yellow burnt caramel pour with a ton of head that takes a good while to fade. Leaves a 1cm creamy froth on the top, with very nice lacing. Nice looking beer. Aroma is citrus, a touch of grass, some hay, floral and citrus hops. Light sweet malt. A touch of tartness and light barnyard funk. Nice and complex without being overpowering. Flavor is not nearly so complex. Sweetish malts, a slug of yeast (complete with standard Belgian fusels and esters), a tiny bit of tartness and funk, with some floral hops on the very back end. Mouthfeel is quite creamy. This is a good beer, though I wish it was either full on sour or none at all. The hint of tartness just makes me want more, and that is where the beer suffers.

Cloudy straw colored pour. Ginormous head with huge lacing. Smells like applesauce. Including the cinnamon. Needless to say it is spicy. Big carbonation thinning out the mouthfeel. Sweet and bitter taste. Decent beer but a bit on the dry side. Which is to be expected, but still.

Had before but never rated. Though I am told this one changes depending on what year it is. Bought in the iconic orval bowling pin bottle. bottled on Nov. 17th 2010. 6.9%abv. Super hazy dark yellow color to being almost brown. Big fluffy head that took a lot of patients to let settle. but left heavy lace. First sense of aroma was candy sugar with some spice and pine behind that. Also maybe a little funky sweat smell in there. Taste is perfume and bitter with bitterness increasing int he finish greatly.
