mixos (50), Greece Sep 9, 2009 The best parts of this beer is the aroma and the finish. I was surprised with the taste but not a nice surprise. Aromatic, hoppy, fruity, yeasty and first of all very dry trappist beer. Ygberg (82), Sweden Sep 8, 2009 Updated: Oct 11, 2009Fresh aroma of hea and citrus. The appearance is amber with an enormous with head. Flavor is sour and complex with hints of fruit. A very special and excellent beer llcooldave (309), San Antonio, Texas, USA Sep 6, 2009 Very very foamy head... I lost some of it to foam. Cloudy amber in color. Sweet fruity aroma, almost like cherries with a creamy note mixed in at the end. Flavor is surprising... I thought it was going to be a bit fruity, which it did start off as a bit citrusy, but it finished a bit dry at the end. I could taste it morphing from sweet citrus to dry. Overall, a very complex brew. I look forward to trying this again. Rynoplasty (500), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Sep 2, 2009 Pours light slightly hazy amber with a large off white head. Aroma is fruity and yeasty, with notes of white grapes, light fruit and spices. Flavor is a complex, dry, blend of fruits, light malts, spices and features a slight bitterness at the end. scoth (267), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Sep 2, 2009 Pours clear amber, with a two-finger cream-colored lasting head, good lacing, growing cloudy towards the bottom of the bottle. Very yeasty aroma, with coriander and pepper overtones, and some caramel, biscuit, and floral undertones. Medium body, zesty, sharp, aggressive and dry. Flavors of biscuit, fig and spice, some pineapple and banana, grass and citrus. Medium tart citrusy and bitter earthy finish. It takes no prisoners and accepts no concessions. kloekus (14), Netherlands Aug 29, 2009 Pothuiske, maastricht (NL) ; Solid stable foam on top of a nicely amber/orange coloured beer. A spice aroma with al type of acid flavors and of course the wet dog dominantly present. The first taste impression is bitter - sour but after some time some sweetness is coming through Nena (120), Seattle, Washington, USA Aug 29, 2009 Updated: Oct 12, 2009Bottle from September 08. Pours a cloudy amber with an amazing enormous cream colored head that becomes chunky as it falls. Aroma is sharp, sour, grassy, with some hemp. Flavor has a lot of wet hay and earthy flavors, with white grape and sour lemon. Finishes bitter.
10/12/09 - had it again in a bottle from 4/2009, but I’m leaving my rating as reflecting the older bottle. The younger bottle was good and a bit sharper and hoppier, but the sourness and earthy complexity wasn’t as present. I think I’m sticking to drinking this a little more aged. RichardW (241), Carlisle, Cumbria, England Aug 28, 2009 A low score. This was a fresh one, bottled April ’09. The initial aroma from the bottle was almost cider-esque, flavour is sour cherries and aniseed, with quite a harsh bitterness and dry on the back of the throat, so I can understand the wine comparison, mentioned below. Lots of life in the pour, with an effervescent, light, foaming head. Not the classic I’ve read about, but a beer I fully intend to cellar for a year or three to see how it compares.
