In contrast to all the others, the Orval Trappist brewery makes only one beer for the general public. It has an intensely aromatic and dry character. Between the first and second fermentations there is also an additional dry-hopping process. Through this the beer acquires its pronounced hoppy aroma and extra dry taste.

Pours clear/hazy light copper. Extremely intense head. Doesnít look really think, though. Good retention. Aroma is mainly yeast -- apple esters galore! -- and herbal hops. Taste is more balanced than what aroma suggests : much more malty, actually. Really dry -- a summer trappist, actually? Problem is : never, ever drink this one cold. Extremely thin body + a cabonation that seems to kick a lot at cold temperature makes if for an extremely bland experience. This is a beer thatís better drank over 10 degrees, and, really, dont waste time drinking it cold. So, a good hour after the first sip... much better, but still a bit too thin for my tastes. Overall --- itís good, but I was disappointed.

Bottle, 33cl. Sweet hay aroma, barnyard, very herbal and complex, with a few fruity notes (not predominant), very balanced and fresh. Fabulous dense white head that stays in place for the whole time, on top of a dark amber liquid. As for the flavours, right away a pungent bitter-ish woody taste: oak and leather, very herbal and developing in mouth. The taste is very dry on palate, probably due to the lack of sweetness, which, together with the woody flavours, gives it an almost whisky-like character. Creamy-slick texture and medium carbonation with a clean, bitter finish. Medium to full body. A marvellous beer to enjoy slowly - not exactly my type, but I judged according to the objective greatness of the flavours and aromas. What can I say, it is a beer unlike virtually any other one. A very particular trappist that leaves nobody indifferent.

Gorgeous rose amber colour with a lively white frothy head. Aroma of smokey orange malt with . Well balanced flavours of sour bitterness and dry roasted nuts. The more recent bottles , as I have been drinking it for 20 years, seem to have more sweet malt and less sourness or it could be my age.

Bärnsten med ett rejält vitt skum. Jäst i doft. Tunn smak tyvärr är detta inte min grej. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Spora, gruba i nietrwała piana, o dziwo zdobi szkło, barwa ciemno bursztynowa, lekko mętna, piwo ładnie pracuje w szkle. Zapach przede wszystkim dziki, nieco kwaskowy, stajenny, nasuwający skojarzenie z końską skůrzaną używaną uprzężą a z drugiej strony estry owocowe (czerwona porzeczka i morele) i lekkie fenole (czerwony pieprz, może ta szałwia właśnie). Nietypowe piwo trapistůw - dość agresywne w odbiorze, wyraźnie odczuwalna dzikość, solidna goryczka, subtelnie wiążące to wszystko kandyzowane owoce, rodzynki i suszone gruszki... Mimo to trunek jest zaskakująco pijalny, ułożony i smaczny.

Bottle from Beermoth, Manchester, £2.90. Decided to see if itís all itís cracked up to be and Iím not disappointed (although I am quite a harsh marker). Cloudy, dirty amber beer with extremely frothy white head which starts at 40% of the glass. Really pleasant, subtle but busy aroma. Cherries, orange, tart jellied fruits, pine and even lavender in the nose. Taste is super dry and well balanced and certainly pleasantly delicate for a beer of its strength. Smooth on the palate too. Ticks a lot of boxes.
