In contrast to all the others, the Orval Trappist brewery makes only one beer for the general public. It has an intensely aromatic and dry character. Between the first and second fermentations there is also an additional dry-hopping process. Through this the beer acquires its pronounced hoppy aroma and extra dry taste.

Bottle from the LCBO (6.9%). Pours a hazy deep orange with a lot of fine white head that dissipates a bit slowly. Smell is a bit sweet with some caramel, some grassy hops, and some definite yeast funky bready earthiness. Palate is on the lighter side of medium with a whole lot of frothy carbonation in the mouth. Taste is hard to describe, a bit sweet and acidic at first, the carbonation takes a strong hold and then tastes a bit bitter, and after the carbonation recedes you’re left with a bitter hoppy flavour. Very interesting, though not really up my alley.

Amber, cloudy with a lot of foam. Sour, yeasty and dry. Interesting flavor. Not my favorite Belgian. Different than most other Trappists I’ve had...a change of pace

Butelka 0.33L.
Odczucie: Wysokie wysycenie, faktura pudrowa, ciało niskie.

Bottle @ home. Pours amber color and a huge white head with some nice lacing. Dry and balanced sour aroma with notes of yeast, fruits and citrus zest, spices integrated with hints of thinner (in a nice way), hay. Dry thin bodied mouth feel with medium but sharp carbonation. Balanced taste of fruits, lemon zest, oranges,, yeast, wet hay, spices , leather and some horse blanket. Long lasting bitterness and sourness in the aftertaste.

This is a legendary beer, and a great starting point for trappist beers. It plays close with medium sourness - without being too sour - and there’s lovely aromas of licorice and bubblegum. It’s red, cloudy, and has a full head. It’s lively - pops in your mouth with a slightly sour carbonation.

Not a fan. Sour yeasty is a good way to describe this beer. Slightly sourish fruity yeast aroma. Flavor matches....kind of tart too. Just not really refreshing.

Pours hazy amber with a medium white head. Nose is citrusy (orange peel) and spicy. Complex aromas of citrus, lemon, herbs, hay, bitter cocoa, spices and Belgian yeast. Fizzy carbonation, thin texture. The mouthfeeling is unique, dry, spicy, sour and bitter. Long bitter and dry finish. Not my favorite type of beer, but something really exceptionnal here, a unique beer experience !

Bottle from Ridgewood Wine. Aroma: complex mix of spices, yeast, malt, citrus, a little hay, very earthy. Reminds me a bit of a refined saison mixed with an IPA and a light Belgian. Also, a bit like some dry white wines, unique and fantastic. Appearance: Brown/copper colored, white head that took a very long time to disappear. The head tasted similar to the nose, but with a bit more citrus. Flavor is similar to the head, maybe a bit more citrus than the nose. Palate: Little bit of spice, 0 alcohol. Very well done.

Amber color with haze and white and long head. Fruity, lemon and spicy notes and also the characteristic leather an cider aromas. Bitter taste, full body and high carbonation. Dry and long finish. High quality and different Trappist beer
