COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In contrast to all the others, the Orval Trappist brewery makes only one beer for the general public. It has an intensely aromatic and dry character. Between the first and second fermentations there is also an additional dry-hopping process. Through this the beer acquires its pronounced hoppy aroma and extra dry taste.
Bottled at 5.2% abv - can go up as high as 7.2%

UPDATED: FEB 4, 2006 Original tasting 12/7/04, rerate 02/07/05, rerate 02/04/06. 330ml brown bottle. Poured cloudy orange, fantastic head and lacing. Earthy, leathery and fruity aromas with lots of sweet orangey, floral hops. Flavour is earhty malts with sweet orange hop flavours, slightly herbal/medicinal qualities. Hoppy bite leads to a dry finish with some yeast. Everytime I have this it gets better and better.

For me this is the perfect beer. Golden amber beer with a creamy head that lasts and lasts. The aroma is citrus and hoppy. The taste is slightly bitter but the palate is perfect and well balanced. I love this beer!

Complex (but in a good way) taste, with bitterness in aftertaste and very good hop.

330ml bottle from Masuyo’s in Asagaya. Poured into a stemmed tulip. Hazy brown/orange color with a huge off-white soapy head. Strong barnyard, brett, orange zest, brown sugar aromas present. Nice lacing throughout. Nice sweet/sour notes on the palate with a great long dry finish. Citrus and brett notes become more present as the beer warms up to room temperature. World class beer.

Rating the Trappistes is pretty difficult since many of them are world-class brews, they are generally all complex, offering a variety of often subtle flavors, and many cleverly disguise a high alcohol content. I drank Orval decades ago in Belgium and am drinking it again now. Not my favorite of this style, with a lower ABV and a less complicated taste profile, it is still a fine example of brewing as an art. Enjoyed in a Chimay chalice it is a little bitter, certainly quite dry and with a bit of a metallic finish... still understated and quite drinkable.

Golden colour, huge white head. Aroma is fruity and yeasty. Taste is really mild, yeasty, fruity, with an aftertaste of cake. Nothing special, almost boring. Overrated, probably because the label reads trappist. There are far better Belgians out there, in my opinion.
