In contrast to all the others, the Orval Trappist brewery makes only one beer for the general public. It has an intensely aromatic and dry character. Between the first and second fermentations there is also an additional dry-hopping process. Through this the beer acquires its pronounced hoppy aroma and extra dry taste.

Mooi oranje trappistenbier met flinke schuimkraag. Licht zuurtje, veel hop. Mooie balans, redelijk dun. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

How could such a masterpiece have such a low rating. Any official Trappist should start at 4.5 and move up. Pours cloudy with a very thick foamy head, beautiful aroma of sweet flowers, essence and love. Great beer but not at the top on the Trappist list for me. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

L: a deep orange, hazy, a big two fingers of fluffy white head. S: a big acidic vinious white wine note coupled with yeast, citrus, grass. Slightly funky, big and bright, orange, light spice. T: delicious, sour citrus, orange marmalade, bready, a little champagne grape sweetness. I get different things at different stages. A sweet umeshu note, slightly boozy, hits my nose and palate. There’s malt, Belgian yeast, brett. So complex. F: effervescent, bubbles dancing on the tongue, and a fluffiness that really fills the mouth. That stays, and the malt drags back down the throat, leaving you with a fluffy tongue. It finishes really dry. O: Classic, wonderful Belgian pale. I get a new experience each time I try it.

Trappista insolita, segnata dai luppoli, complessa e secca al massimo grado. Inconfondibile e di carattere.

Embouteillée en février 2015... Je goûte l’orange amère et le fût de chêne. C’est un peu terne et la présence de levures est très importante. C’est un bon produit normalement mais celle-ci semble avoir été mal conservée ;-(

Yellow golden haze, larger bubbles. Smell of sour lambic, as if was also a wheat beer, sour peat note, a slice of caramel sweetness, roses. Actually nice and complex multilayered smell. The taste is almost as good, very similar tonality but lacking some sweetness and roses and yet, this utter lambic sour bitter wheat peated beer, that’s what this is. Not strong but mild-sour ale. A house style for sure.

UPDATED: JAN 14, 2016 330ml bottle, bottled 15 Feb 2015. Beautiful sunset orange pour with large dense frothy head in my Westvleteren goblet. Unmistakable brett in the aroma - horse blanket, barnyard notes, lightly sour lactic acid notes are quite apparent as well. Fantastic balance in the taste between the sweet honey maltiness, very light apple cider vinegar sourness and earthy, funky, mouth puckering dryness and bitterness. Light bodied and very drinkable. This beer has such a legendary reputation for good reason. Brilliant.
