COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
In contrast to all the others, the Orval Trappist brewery makes only one beer for the general public. It has an intensely aromatic and dry character. Between the first and second fermentations there is also an additional dry-hopping process. Through this the beer acquires its pronounced hoppy aroma and extra dry taste.

A: Amber orange in color with 2+ fingers of foam (that lasts forever). S: Yeasty, a little funky, some tart apple. T: A bit tart, yeast, with a mild funk, and not necessarily bitter or sweet in any way that I can tell. M: On the lighter side, pretty effervescent and dry D: Could have quite a few of these...

UPDATED: OCT 25, 2011 You know, I’m thinking I should try this one again. I got a bottle from a reputable store but just wasn’t a fan... maybe it was too old, if that’s even possible. (3.5) Re-rate 10/25/11. Wow, that was a horrible rating. Let’s try again. Bottle. Hazy light amber pour, borderline orange, with a big, thick, creamy, frothy, tan head (I accidentally poured too much and it stayed intact as a head mountain). Tons of lacing. Nice brett aroma - a bit funky, with floral aspects, a bit of lemon peel, and some sweet malt. Nice dry flavor that lingers with flower petals and bread. Good stuff! I’m going to have to drink more of this!

Pours yellow-gold with a nice white head and a good deal of lacing. Initial whiff is earthy funk, hay, green apples, and lemon rind. Slightly hoppy. Taste brings forward the funk in a not so unstrained way. Something about it just doesn’t balance. This is about a year old, and I think the hops and the funk just might be quite out of balance at this point, with the semi-aged hops detracting from the overall package. Mouthfeel is dry and well carbonated. Drinkability is average; nowhere near Westvleteren Blonde. I’ll have to get a fresh bottle and see if it fares any better. Rating # 100. Bottle, stored in my cellar for six months. Massive rocky off-white head. Color is slightly hazed pale golden orange. Initial aroma of acidic fruits and spices, then candysugar, yeast, berries, perfume, apples… along with grassy and flowery hops. First impression of taste is dry and slight tart; pine, dried fruits and orange peel. Followed by a delicate hopbitterness and lots of spices and herbs that I’m unfortunately not able to define. Lingering fruity and dry finish with a hoppy bite. This is a real world classic, and a style in it’s own. Outstanding.

UPDATED: NOV 6, 2004 (330 ml bottle). Cloudy deep golden with an enormous creamy head. Intense, overwhelming but lovely aroma of ensilage, horse stable, leather and spicy fruit cake. Spicy complex flavour, hops stand out, dry aftertaste. Clearly a world class beer.

New Bottle. Pours a cloudy orange with an amazing head. Spicy taste with hints of fruit and a hoppy aftertaste. Really dry and great. I could drink a lot of this.

Bottle from 5/2007. Huge head this time! Great orange-copper color, fizzy and calling my name. Singular aroma of hops, some funky yeast, grass, citrus. Very hoppy, citrus, funky flavor with a bit of caramel malt. There still is really no other beer like this! Smooth, and you can taste the alcohol, but fabulously complex for such a light beer. Feel like drinking water later, as the finish is so dry. Love it. Bought a whole case so I’ll probably be re-doing these ratings over the next year or so.
