In contrast to all the others, the Orval Trappist brewery makes only one beer for the general public. It has an intensely aromatic and dry character. Between the first and second fermentations there is also an additional dry-hopping process. Through this the beer acquires its pronounced hoppy aroma and extra dry taste.

DATE TASTED: February 21, 2014... GLASSWARE: Chimay 125th Anniversary chalice... OCCASION: prepping for Willís 7th birthday party... APPEARANCE: dark cumulonimbus, Everest-like white climbing head--three-fingers edge out of the glass; medium amber body; hazy lacing continues throughout the drinking experience... AROMA: bright, sugary yeast wafts with slightly pungent, earthy grass and raison; grapefruit and pear are present...PALATE: light to medium-bodied; easily drinkable and lengthy aftertaste--one that is desirable...TASTE: sweet candied sweet hops pucker the mouth; pear and apple make for a perfumed blend, supported by a surprisingly hearty malt base--balanced and pleasing... OVERALL: alcohol adequately masked,, this Trappist deftly hits the bliss point---malty/hoppy/yeasty/fruity in equal turns; only regret is waiting nearly a decade to revisit and review the "pearl in the fish" labeled brew...

Very well balanced beer. Has a beautiful and longlasting head. Great golden/amber color. Probably one of my favourite.

Pours a hazy dirty amber. Aroma of sour apples, dirt, candi sugar. Flavor rather bitter and dry, earthy, almost leathery, with some banana-y fruitiness lingering toward the back, more candi sugar. Amazingly different beer, good.

Bowling pin to Orval chalice. Cloudy light yellow-brown. Mountainous peaks and valleys within 2 minutes. They?re still there on the last sip. Biting carbonation. So dry. I want another sip immediately. Definite bright citrus character. Tartness present but relatively subtle after only 9 months in the bottle.

Cloudy amber, gorgeous sexy coating with extra strong legs...stinks like rotten apples! (not finding it pleasing) Rich flavors of dark fruits and burnt bitter hops with slightly sweet apples and lemon. Powerful coarse and dry after taste. Very strong vinous feel and a dry coarse mouth coat. Overall : Looks can sometime be deceiving... Perfectly drinkable for trying a different taste, but way too spicy for me, or was my bottle too fresh? I will try this beer again after at least 2 years in the cellar, until then I donít see why this beer is so popular.

From a bottle at a fancy restaurant. Great complex flavor. Earthy but sweet and slightly tart. Outstanding balance. Unique in a crowded segment. One of my favorites. Want to try again.

Bottled 28/08/2014. Amber colour with a long lasting white big head. Fruity hoppy aroma; a bit sour also, yeast. Taste is lightly sweet with a quite an intense bitterness. Rather complex beer with a hoppy and somewhat dry character in the beginning with a finish that is best described as a mix of maltiness, burn sugar and belgian yeast , Full body and lively carbonation.

Iíve never rated orval, thatís weird. Tastes like orval. Itís great, if youíre reading reviews to consider buying orval, youíre in trouble.

Lichtbruin troebel bier met veel schuim wat mooi blijft staan. Daarmee is ook alles gezegd. Smaak is iets zuur en apart, citroen en muffig. Ik blijf dit een bijzonder bier vinden wat niet bij me past.

Bottle from Cornelius (bottled on 24/03/2015). Hazy copper, big fluffy off-white head that gently collapses down to crags. Yeast, dry grass, dried stoned fruit (cherry, prune?). Medium body, initially quite sprightly fizz that fades a little. Some booze, malts, farmhouse hops and light bitter finish. Caramel sweetness and slightly oily. I can see why people get excited.
