In contrast to all the others, the Orval Trappist brewery makes only one beer for the general public. It has an intensely aromatic and dry character. Between the first and second fermentations there is also an additional dry-hopping process. Through this the beer acquires its pronounced hoppy aroma and extra dry taste.

Lettere dominerende kulsyreindhold. En legende blandt trappist-øl, men fås i min optik meget bedre hos andre klostre. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

330 mL bottle. The pour is a bright golden orange color with a huge pillowy white head that fades down to a thicker collar and a light film with a pretty decent lace left behind. The aroma is surprising. There is a nice tartness that I would imagine comes from the dry hopping. There isn’t a lot of belgian character here. There is a light caramel and a decent malt, but it’s mostly tart and crisp. A combination of hop and grape skins. The flavor is interesting. There is a tartness and a profound hoppiness, but it’s strange. There is a light malt and that same vinousness. The carbonation is bright and spritzy, which isn’t that well matched, and a lingeringly bright, tart finish. This is completely surprising for what I was expecting. Nothing like a Belgian at all. Hmm...

Nice amber color, minimal white head. Sweet aroma of brett yeasts, fruits like orange and peach, light caramel aroma. Light sour and sweet, light body, fizzy carbonation, medium bitterness. Good wild refreshing beer

Fles van Januari 2016. Oranje kleurig, troebel, matige witte schuimkraag, deze zakt aardig snel. Aromas: Brett wilde gist, tikje banaan, moutig, bloemige / fruitige hops, hooi.

Bottle from the Queen Edith, Cambridge. In a terribly inappropriate glass but I can live with that. Golden with a huge, loose, slightly off-white head. Yeast domimates the aroma with an indefinable floral funk. A perfect aroma. Sweet, yet slightly sour, with a cheeky medicinal hop bitterness at the end. There’s something almost sexual about the aftertaste. I crave this.

Great. The fresh taste of the dryhopping and the smooth taste of the sugars in combination with the orval yeast makes this beer simply perfect. One word: Unique Serving Tip: if you want to have a great ’beer taste experience’ make sure your glass is cleaned and flush very well. Flush the typical Orval glass with hot water 60-80 degrees celcius to make sure all germs and dust is removed. Secondary, make sure that all the carbonate is flushed with water. Cool the glass afterwoods with cold water to prevent it from braking a part. This process will give you the ultimate ’taste sensation’ an Orval Trappist Ale deserves!

I was really excited by this beer. It pours a darkish orange and has a big fluffy head. it doesn’t have strong aromas but you can pick up very hoppy notes. It is the smell you would get if you were to have the hop resin and nothing else. very herbal. The taste is totally different to any other Trappist beer. It is very dry and not much else. It has high carbonation but once this mellows the taste of the beer comes through a little more. However even then it is nothing special, just very hoppy. The beer also feels stronger than the 6.2% on the bottle. It is very warming considering but its pleasant I suppose. I will get more of this beer and see how it does with a little more ageing. It should calm down and become a little more complex, perhaps even more mellow.

Freshly bottled. Unclear orange amber. Off White lasting head. Moderate funk, growing as it warmed. Citrus. Some earthy, spicy hops; mild bitterness. A little woody. Semi dry. Light body. Very interested to try an older vintage.
