In contrast to all the others, the Orval Trappist brewery makes only one beer for the general public. It has an intensely aromatic and dry character. Between the first and second fermentations there is also an additional dry-hopping process. Through this the beer acquires its pronounced hoppy aroma and extra dry taste.

Bottle at 8C. Not very complex but nice aroma, color and head. I was expecting more, but still a great beer.

Bottle - Hazy deep amber colour, large and stable rocky off-white head. Rich fuity and malty aromas with decent herbal and flowery hops. Taste is comlex malty with gentle hop bitterness. Peach, grapes, some caramel, dried plum and some orange. Medium body, average carbonation, silky texture, fruity finish with elegant hop aromas. Well balanced, really great belgian ale with complex fruitiness and sophisticated hopping.

Great authentic trappist ale (barley wine), though very different from the rest of them. Has similar aroma as the Grimbergen Ambrée, just more controlled and toned down. Can only recommend!

Un grand classique. Grosse mousse, robe assez sombre.

Very unique and unparalleled taste. Certainly one of the best beers in the world. Best to drink 2 years after bottling.

Bottle from 2013. Hazy dark amber pour with huge white head. Aroma has lots of spices. Some citric brett and also cherry. Taste has instant sourness. Sparkling feeling. Beautiful and loaded with flavours. Lots of similarities with wild fermented brews. Medium carbonation.

Pours a medium amber with a thin white head. Yeasty, bready aroma. Lots of carbonation. Somewhat fruity taste with a tingly sensation and a dry finish. Not as enjoyable as I expected.

Poured from 33cl bottle [bottled in 2011 (label is messed up so can’t tell when exactly); best before 18/07/2016 - aged]. Clear, orangey brown with off-white head. Aroma of orange and peach, light belgian yeast, some spice. Taste of yeast and spice with very mild brett and a subtle dry hop finish. Flavour actually dissipates a bit quickly and is almost a light watery finish. Quite good, but it doesn’t quite land the vault.

Cloudy honey. Large head, low retention to medium head, then on hogh retention. Aroma intensity 3.5/5. Yeasty aroma, notes of hay and thyme. Medium bitter, light sour. Medium dry finish. Fizzy carbonation. Light to medium body. Interesting palate

At home, 2016 33cl bottle. Pour: golden honey, dark orange, tall head, slow dissipation, lumpy foam. Smell: malt, metallic, toffee. Taste: first - sweet, malt, ; mid - malty; after - dry metallic bitterness. Mouthfeel: slightly aggressive, strong malty bitterness, dry. Verdict: Pleasant and filling experience. Strong flavours, but a very good ale.
