DruncanVeasey (1633), Burbage, Leicestershire, England Jul 3, 2006 Updated: Oct 8, 2007 Muddy orange tulip spiralling with fingers of bubbles. Grass, alcohol, bubblegum and cinammon in the aroma. Whatever Jagermeister is spiced with, that also. Could happily sit here inhaling this all evening. Might wash my hair in it. Flavour begins with sweet, overripe banana, but finishes with a bludgeoning punch of dry hops you just don’t see coming. An Irresistibly fragrant and well-balanced beer. Re-rate 23/01/07. Didn’t mention the pillowy suds, wheaty afters and aromatic herbal booziness. This is simply one of the most unique, complex and uncompromising beers in the world. Re-rate 20/03/07 Hmm. Musty hops, horseblanket, booze, banana, cardboard and metal. Nothing like as bitter or maybe as great as I once thought. Still a classic, though...(09/10/07) Acidic yeasty sparkle and lambic funk. Sour lemon and brie rind in the nose like an Oude geuze. But no other beer in the world smells like this. Or tastes like it, come to think of it. Hop onslaught cushioned with biscuity malt. What an intense balance. A beer that yields up something different every time you drink it, and it’s always something good.
SamAdams777 (36), Abilene or Stephenville, Texas, USA Sep 7, 2008 Pours nice, keeps a decent head on the beer. Smells like a garden. Thin, crisp, sweet flavor. Strong abv. The aftertaste is amazing, even if the beer itself is a bit to sweet for my liking. Very carbonated. Remindes me of a pumpkin soda. mikalooch (18), , New Jersey, USA Sep 7, 2008 Pours cloudy orange-amber with a very generous beige head which lasts. Smells like sweet bread, very nice. Starts off strong, sourdough bread and dark fruit, and is very dry. Goes down smooth, has a bit more carbonation that the other trappist ales, warms as it reaches bottom. Very enjoyable, definitely a unique and complex brew. bblack99 (11), Kansas City, Missouri, USA Sep 4, 2008 Bottle, pours a cloudy orange with a fizzy, pillowy white head that lasts relatively well, and clings nicely to the glass. Strong flowery aroma with a hoppy bite and dry alcoholic finish. cgreb (34), Marburg, Germany Sep 4, 2008 bottle - (thank’s Alex!) - Hazy orange beer with a thick white head. Sweet aroma, reminds me on hot spiced wine. Sweet alcoholic flavour. Underhook (112), Lincoln Park, New Jersey, USA Sep 4, 2008 Bottled 12/27/2007. Pop the cap. Super sweet, flowery, perfume smell. Fantastic nose, excellent, excellent. Doughy head. Light, cloudy hue with a very faint bit of plum coloring. A ton of malt, light fruits. Smooth, a little bit of bitter in there. Tingly, natural carbonation that isn’t overdone. More sips- this beer is balanced. More bitter now as opposed to overly malty during the first sip. This is an incredibly complex beer. A bit of a bready yeastiness. Trying to pin down the fruit taste but I can’t. Some light grapes... peach? Ah, lots of apple and pear here also. It’s like a good movie, you notice something new with each time you experience it. This comes highly, highly recommended from me. Absolutely fabulous, one of the best single beers I’ve ever had.
EDIT- Just noticed that this was a milestone for me... Nice beer to have for my 100th rating. :)
