DSG (867), Yuvalim, Israel Feb 12, 2007 Updated: Apr 10, 2008 Re-rate 3/8/08: Bottle at De Heeren van Liedekercke in Denderleeuw. Bottled on 2/24/05. Appears on the menu as "Orval Joost 35 Jaar" but I don’t know what it means. Slightly hazy orange color with a big consistent white head. Aroma of fruits, some bretty funk and some hoppy notes. A completely dry flavor with lots of citrus (grapefruit, some orange peels), some wonderful bretty touches, a bit of spices and some hops. Medium-bodied. Wonderful. Not as good as the older bottles I’ve has but very close. 8/5/9/5/18=4.5
Re-rate 1/17/08: Bottle (almost 6 years old). Magnificent appearance of hazy orange color with a big and thick off-white head. A really bretty aroma with some barnyard, loads of citrus and some other fruits. Very dry flavor with a good dose of funky sourness as well as some fruitiness and some malt. A dry finish with some citric-lemon touches, a bit of spice, and (surprisingly at this age) some hops. Medium-bodied. Wow, very close to perfection. Funny how I gave this beer the same score now and when I was rather new to good beers. I’m almost tempted to open another bottle but I want to save the two bottles I still have in case the only store in Israel that still carries this (all bottles at this age by the way), doesn’t have any more left.

Bottle (almost 5 years old). Dark cloudy orange with a medium head. A very complex perfumy aroma with malt, hops, citrus (a lot of orange). Flavor is unlike any beer i’ve ever tasted - sweet, fruity, citrusy (orange and a bit of lemon), and a bit spicy. Finish is wonderful dry hop bitterness with a bit of sourness. A very pleasent mouthfeel. A full body. Amazing and unique.

Slayer85 (457), Firenze, Italy Oct 9, 2008 To celebrate my 100th Belgian rating. January 2007 bottle. An unclear medium amber beer with a big, rocky, persistent and lacing white head. Incredible aroma, very yeasty, but also malty and hoppy with notes of orange peel, flowers, grass, barnyard, spices and fruits. The flavour has a medium sweetness and a medium sourmess and is perfectly balanced. Hoppy, with again orange peel, many spices and fruits and the fanatstic Orval yeast. Medium body, lively carbonation, very dry long finish with high bitterness and medium acidity. Too much complexity to be described. Perfect aroma, incredible taste, great mouthfeel and highly drinkability make this beer almost pefect. Different from every beer I have had. Highly underrated, this is truly a world classic. JonnyDr (112), , South Yorkshire, England Oct 9, 2008 Murky amber beer. Decent carbonation and short lasting white head. Malt, fruits and hops lead to a dry spicy finish. Lovely. plovmand (676), Helsinge, Denmark Oct 8, 2008 Bottle. Murky light amber colour with a long lasting off-white to beige head. Aroma is spicy and fruity and the brett is in front without being dominating. Complex dry bitter bit sour taste with fruity and citric hoppy notes. Medium bodied. One of a kind. swooper (97), Kladno, Czech Republic Oct 5, 2008 alcohol, bread, cereal, nuts, amber, hazy, rocky head, frothy, very bitter, medium body, bitter, long finish, average carbonation, rpjonesga (1), Mableton, Georgia, USA does not count Oct 4, 2008 I have been holding on to this particular bottle of beer for about a year. The beer pours a wonderfully golden haze with a head that lingers nicely. The aroma has hints of pine with a bit of licorice (at least for me). It would be difficult to find any flaws in this beer. Balance is the key. Overall, this Belgian beer isn’t as sweet as others that I have enjoyed which sets it apart. I would highly recommend this beer - enjoyed in the proper Orval glass of course!
