3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: AUG 2, 2011 Bottle. Poured a murky amber with some orange undertones and a huge white foamy head that was mostly diminishing but had fantastic lacing.
The aroma was heavy of a straw like malt, a moderate floral hop and a moldy scented yeast with notes of dried fruit (raisins), a hint of spice and some citrus (lemon and maybe orange) with a mild alcohol tinge.
It tasted a malty, a little bitter and slightly sour with a hint of a peppery spice in the beginning and finished lightly bitter and yeasty with notes of fruit, citrus and a slight alcohol tinge at the end. The flavor was left to linger for a while, leaving a light sourness on the palate.
Mouthfeel was light to medium in body and a little oily in texture with the carbonation being quite pronounced, almost prickly in feel.
Overall a fantastic Trappist Ale, I can see now why the Monks only brew this one beer.

4.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle - Hazy deep amber colour, large and stable rocky off-white head. Rich fuity and malty aromas with decent herbal and flowery hops. Taste is comlex malty with gentle hop bitterness. Peach, grapes, some caramel, dried plum and some orange. Medium body, average carbonation, silky texture, fruity finish with elegant hop aromas. Well balanced, really great belgian ale with complex fruitiness and sophisticated hopping.

Great authentic trappist ale (barley wine), though very different from the rest of them. Has similar aroma as the Grimbergen Ambrée, just more controlled and toned down. Can only recommend!

Un grand classique. Grosse mousse, robe assez sombre.

Very unique and unparalleled taste. Certainly one of the best beers in the world. Best to drink 2 years after bottling.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle from 2013. Hazy dark amber pour with huge white head. Aroma has lots of spices. Some citric brett and also cherry. Taste has instant sourness. Sparkling feeling. Beautiful and loaded with flavours. Lots of similarities with wild fermented brews. Medium carbonation.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a medium amber with a thin white head. Yeasty, bready aroma. Lots of carbonation. Somewhat fruity taste with a tingly sensation and a dry finish. Not as enjoyable as I expected.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Poured from 33cl bottle [bottled in 2011 (label is messed up so can’t tell when exactly); best before 18/07/2016 - aged]. Clear, orangey brown with off-white head. Aroma of orange and peach, light belgian yeast, some spice. Taste of yeast and spice with very mild brett and a subtle dry hop finish. Flavour actually dissipates a bit quickly and is almost a light watery finish. Quite good, but it doesn’t quite land the vault.

At home, 2016 33cl bottle.
Pour: golden honey, dark orange, tall head, slow dissipation, lumpy foam.

Mouthfeel: slightly aggressive, strong malty bitterness, dry.
Verdict: Pleasant and filling experience. Strong flavours, but a very good ale.
