3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: AUG 2, 2011 Bottle. Poured a murky amber with some orange undertones and a huge white foamy head that was mostly diminishing but had fantastic lacing.
The aroma was heavy of a straw like malt, a moderate floral hop and a moldy scented yeast with notes of dried fruit (raisins), a hint of spice and some citrus (lemon and maybe orange) with a mild alcohol tinge.
It tasted a malty, a little bitter and slightly sour with a hint of a peppery spice in the beginning and finished lightly bitter and yeasty with notes of fruit, citrus and a slight alcohol tinge at the end. The flavor was left to linger for a while, leaving a light sourness on the palate.
Mouthfeel was light to medium in body and a little oily in texture with the carbonation being quite pronounced, almost prickly in feel.
Overall a fantastic Trappist Ale, I can see now why the Monks only brew this one beer.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottled on Jan 23, 2013. Drank July 31, 2014. Huge rocky head that quickly collapsed. Light orange and very clear. Horse blanket, clove, bubble gum and apricot aroma. Floral bitterness with sour fruit taste. Subtle sweetness masked by high carbonation. Finish is very dry. Body is light to medium light towards the end of the bottle. The beer is a real tongue- lasher. Assertive and refreshing like club soda but with a complexity that beckons one back for another pull.

Bottle 033 L @ home, a year after bottling; pours dark orange with rich, creamy, good lacing and mostly lasting white head. Aroma is strong yeasty, fruity, pear, apricot, yellow/green grape. The flavor is sweet malty with a hint of brett funky sourness and moderate hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is a trippel like, dry at the finish and well carbonated beer. It is a quite simple, well balanced, enjoyable, refreshing and drinkable beer.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20

Color: clear dark amber beer with small carbonation and high ivory foam. Smell: sweet candy notes, with brown sugar notes. Sour notes and nice malt presence. Taste: nice sour sweet taste. Brown sugar and candy presence. Good equilibrium! Nice beer but not easy drinkable. The complexity of sour sweet taste can be difficult to drink. Aftertaste: nice balance of malt and sour notes. Really amazing beer !!!

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Aged bottle (2010) @ Kulmimator, Antwerp. Amber colour, just a little hazy (no particles), big off-white head. Taste and nose became rounded and soft, very much down on sourness (which I don’t particularly like in the regular Orval), with a more earthy, spicy flavour emerging next to caramel sweet malty groundtones. Low carbonated, good body (a bit watery), soft mouthfeel. Not on my toplist but an interesting taste.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
33cl bottle served in a Trappist glass. Pours a wonderful light amber colour with a perfectly foamy and voluminous off white head which lasts the entirety of the drink. Aroma is somewhat subdued but faintly aromatic; the taste however is a perfect balance of flowery hops and candy sugar sweetness. A very good and unique Trappist.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
