UPDATED: MAY 19, 2012 burnt orage, foamy head, plenty of lacing. Nose is caramel, malt, and strong pine and citrus. Bitter on the palate followed by pine, citrus, and faint flower before being washed away from malt and caramel.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Can date February 2012; Sampled April 2012
A solid pour into my Lost Abbey Teku glass produces a three finger thick, nicely tan head. The beer is a brilliantly clear, concentrated copper color with red highlights that shows bright, almost metallic sheened, copper hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells nicely dank with lots of pine, and herbaceous character, including a touch of chive character; this is backed by a tropical fruit character laden with lychee, kumquat and pineapple, but the dank herbal character is definitely the dominant note in the nose. While the aroma is aggressively hoppy, it is not over-the top hoppy as hints of cracker and biscuit like malt are just perceptible.
My first sip is bitingly bitter from the start through to the finish. The beer gets more herbal as it flows across my tongue and the finish has a lingering pine and perhaps hemp-like astringency and flavor to it. The body has some heft to it, it rests on the palate with some viscousnous, though it isn’t overly heavy. Bitter flowers, menthol, some garlic chive notes, a dense pine tar character, lots of dank dirty “hemp” notes, and softer notes of lychee, pineapple, and perhaps some kumquat form the dominant character in the flavor. There is just a touch of malt character noticeable underneath the hop onslaught, with touches of cracker like grain and perhaps a hint of biscuit like malt.
This is a little more dank and herbal / pine focused than I prefer in a hop bomb (I prefer them to be fruit-hop balanced), but this will definitely hit the spot for the hop heads out there (including me). If you are particularly sensitive to the chive / garlic / onion note found in some hops, then this may not be the beer for you; it doesn’t have too much of that character though, as I am able to enjoy it. It is likely that the aroma has dropped off a bit in the month and a half since this has been bottled, but the flavor is still scathingly hoppy.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Sampled at 2012 Hickory Hops Festival. What a great brew!!! I’m a huge Dale’s Pale Ale fan, and this one took a traditional Dale’s and dry-hopped the crap out of it. What results is a rich, complex IPA that is dark amber with a huge soapy head. The nose is of caramel and floral notes. Flavors are big caramel, some alcohol, pine-pepper hops, some citrus. With such an oily palate and huge palate, this was just an awesome brew. One of the best of the 250+ at the festival. Great job!

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
16 oz can. Pours an orange/brown with minimal golden head. Bit of a pine scent to it, perhaps some lime as well. Taste is similar, very dry and bitter, almost evaporates in the mouth. Very good.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours an orange color with a small head and good lacing on the glass.
The aroma is intensely herbal and not unlike the aroma of mowing a ditch. Some fruity hops are in there too, this is one damned pungent beer.
The flavor is not as hop forward as the aroma, but it is herbal and grassy. The bitterness is light and some rich maltiness does shine through. Some booziness is present but I was surprised to see this as high as 8%. The beer is hop dominated in flavor but the hops aren’t as bright or forward as they are in the aroma.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Can. Pours a really dark amber color with an off white head. Aroma is of grapefruit, pine, and lots of resin, earthy notes and garlic, with a small amount of caramel malt. The flavor follows the nose, super piney and earthy, with the garlic flavors, some herbal notes, resin, grapefruit and caramel. The body is medium with a dry mouth feel. Overall a pretty tasty IPA, that is quite different, reminds me a little of Sixpoint Resin.
