Our “Velvet M-80” is a hefty, dry hopped double-red ale with a nose full of aroma, a sticky mouthfeel, a malty middle and unctuous hop flavors. G’Knight sports a surprisingly sensuous finish for a beer of its size (8.7% ABV, 60 IBUs). It’s brewed in tribute to a fellow Colorado craft beer pioneer and Vietnam vet who died fighting a 2002 wild fire outside of our Lyons hometown. Can to glass. Pours a deep red amber color with a foamy tan head. Aroma has a nice juicy hop character with a solid malt backbone. Flavor is much more on the malt side, with hints of molasses, booze. Delicious.

A deep red IPA. Has the smells you associate with an IPA. Piney, grapefruit, various citrus fruits, a hint of the malt. Poured a finger of head with a alight aggressive pour need the end in a pint glass. The head didn’t last long nor did it leave any lace on the glass. Initial taste is the same as the smell. It doesn’t pack as powerful as a punch that you would find with well known examples of west coast IPAs but the flavor is there no doubt. Comparatively it tasted a touch sweeter past the initial taste and had a pleasant aftertaste that stuck around for quite awhile. It didn’t leave early or overstay it’s welcome. Extremely smooth. The only IPA that beats it in smoothness to date is AleSmith’s IPA. Overall, I kept reaching back for the beer after a few sips. Something I would buy again many times as long as I can find it.

Well balanced red with a deep amber color. A hint of sour on the finish. Definitely a hearty beer though.

Keg, Brewdog Leicester. Golden brown with an off white foam. Biscuit and toffee malts with pine. Grapefruit pith with minerals and peppery but not aggressive alcohol. Nutty with spiced oranges and brown sugar. Nothing new here, it’s just a very good beer.

On keg at Shuffledog, Leeds and previously drank from cans from Total Wine, Miami, FL. Deep amber colour with off-white creamy head. Very malty but it doesn’t overpower the hops. Sweet, piney, coton candy, caramely, biscuty and DANK. Well hidden ABV. Sticky, and juicy. Very "American" in that I’ve never had a beer from a UK brewery that has been able to pull this off. Top notch.

1pint can from Total Wine, Tampa.

Can. A- Caramel, pine, malty. A- Mahogany color, hazy liquid, tan head. T- Caramel, alcohol, pine, slightly bitter, malty, seaweed, slightly sweet. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, funky finish. O- Lots of caramel but then an odd resinous seaweed taste to it. I was surprised it wasn’t real bitter though.

Naming a beer after someone is a dangerous proposition. If you want to capture someone’s legacy with some ale and suds, you want it to be the best ale and suds you can make. The beer is a living, changing testament to someone’s existence. Oskar Blues does the tribute beer right. While G’Knight is a bit of a stylistic oddity (Is it a Strong Ale? An Imperial IPA? Does Red (Imperial) IPA deserve its own category?), it’s brewed in the tradition of Lagunitas Sucks and Stone Arrogant Bastard: lots of hops but also lots of malt. Color is ruby red with eggshell suds. Aroma is redolent of pine, citrus, and caramel. Flavor: bitter grapefruit, juicy orange, grass, pine, and caramel. This is a viscous brew but it’s plenty crisp. It’s a worthy tribute to a deserving individual.

Pours a cloudy darker reddish color with off-white head. Citrus, pine, and caramel malts on the nose; follows onto the palate. Full bodied red ale here. Finishes with a nice citrusy hop note.

Can. Very assertive American hoppiness both in flavour and bitterness. Resiny, citrusy zesty. Alcohol evident, mostly in the finish. Also lots of candyish malty sweetness.
