Draft. Medium beige head atop cloudy copper body. Aroma is moderately sweet, caramel, some whiskey, light vinous, toffee. Taste is moderately sweet, caramel, grape, some whiskey, light vinous. Sticky medium-full body, low carbonation. Lost too much of the lovely underlying beer.

I hate BA IIPAs and BA IPA’s because most of the time the barrel takes away from the hops. This beer is one of the few examples opposite of my theory. Vanilla, bourbon, pine and grapefruit. Solid

draft at Brewvival. pours a murky, reddish brown with a thin, khaki head a tight ring of lace. aroma is excellent with big citrus hops, bold whiskey notes, and a touch of pine with notes of sweet vanilla, oak, candy sugar, and caramel malts. flavor was wonderful as well with huge citrus hop notes of orange and white grapefruit, grass, and spicy herbal notes with big vanilla and whiskey barrel notes leading to a boozy, but smooth bitter finish. palate is on the heavy side of medium bodied with light carbonation. overall, a damn nice rendtion of a barrel aged dipa.

On draft at pi bar during SF beer week. Nice mohagony color with some haze and a thin white head. Great aroma of raisin, prune, light bourbon and sweet malt. Full mouthfeel that is slightly cloying - not surprising from the massive sugars. Taste blends the hops and malts well. Hints of vanills and esters, with dried fruit rounding out the palate. The whiskey really shines on a great finish.

On Tap at the Oskar Blues Brewery, Longmont 23/09/2009 Whisky and vanilla aromas. Some carbonation. Amber coloured strong in alcohol and smooth on the palate with a little bitterness and dryness in a full malt finish.

Draft @ Liquids and Solids in Longmont. Deep dirty, murky brown with a thin offwhite head. Nose is woody with some fruit, not the assaultive resinous dankness you’d expect in the regular Gordon. Flavor is rich wood with hints of whisky and a very small alcohol heat present. Finish is smooth and somewhat sweet with a little vanilla in there as well. The hops and citric/piney bitterness are overwhelmed by the woody/vinous character. Mouthfeel is very smooth. All in all - it was OK, but lacked the punch and citric/piney bitterness that is the hallmark of the regular, which I guess is the point of barrell aging, but as a DIPA, I’d prefer a little bitter punch.

UPDATED: MAR 5, 2010 re-rate... Draft sample @ Brewvival on 2/27/10. pours a murky brown... big whiskey notes... faded hops... medium sweet body with more whiskey and caramel notes... not bad, but prefer the regular Gordon.
