Commercial Description:
Gordon is a dry-hopped hybrid strong ale somewhere between a Double IPA and and Imperial Amber Ale (IAA). Brewed in tribute to the late Gordon Knight, Gordon is brewed with massive amounts of American hops and features about 85 IBUs and 8.7% alcohol by volume. Once a winter seasonal, Gordon is now a year-round, limited-supply offering.

Poured amber with a white head. Aroma of pine and caramel. More sweet than bitter. The malt kind of overpowered the hops. Some citrus hints.

12oz can. Interesting. Pours a nice, dark, hazy amber. Looks more like an American Strong Ale opposed to a DIPA. Aroma consisting of woodsy, bready notes. A somewhat pleasantly sweet, almost candy flavor with a nice hop presence still placed in the background. Not quite what I was expecting, but definitely pleased. Let’s see if it ages well.

Can at Church Key, North Beach, San Francisco, with Phyllis, 26th Mar 09. Clear dark amber with a cracking nose of peach, orange zest and loads of hops. Rich and malty on the tongue, great balance, smooth palate. Superb for a beer in a can.

Rich deep brown pour, light brown head. Nice hop and malt aroma with a hint of funk. The flavor starts with a blast of malty sweetness then fades into pine hops; almost like a hoppy scottish. Alcohol is not overpowering. Finish has lasting malt and hops-very nice.

Can. Nice orange-amber color with a small light head. Hoppy aroma with a little bit of graininess hiding in the background - interesting. Flavor is very well-blended, a pleasing mix of bitter and sweet all the way through. A little alcohol comes through. Pretty smooth, as well. Definitely well-made, though there isn’t anything particularly amazing that I’m finding in this brew. Would make a good everyday beer, though, since it’s pretty easy to toss one back.

Canned. Dark-orange-amber colored with am off-white head. Piney, floral and dark crystal malt aroma. Light malt sweetness, medium bitterness and piney hops in the flavor. Lightly astringent, alcoholic and a little metallic. Medium bodied. Decent, but I’m not really feeling this as a DIPA at all.

(can - 12 oz) Ruby red pour with a thick tan head. Aroma is rich and malty with a strong citrus and floral hop background. Flavor begins with a smooth malt and with a light citrus and floral backbone. Flavor disappears almost instantly and only leaves a light bitterness. For as good as it smelled and as good as the flavor began, I was shocked that it disappeared that quickly.

What a great pour from a can. Bright, intense hop aroma, flavor of citrus and kind of a toffee malt, with other fruity, herby overtones. Nice dry finish. Alcohol seems just right. I can wait to pop a can for my snobbish friends who think good beers only come just in dusty old bottles.
