Draft from firkin at Bavarian Lodge. 13 oz. goblet, $6.50. Solid brown with a minimal scrum of foam. A bit of warming alcoholic malt in the nose, too. Solid vanilla taste. Not overly sweet as in many vanilla-ed beers. The peat of the usual Scotch ale is lost behind the vanilla, which seems to be a fair trade.

Pours a hazy deep brown on tap with fluffy tan head that dissipates to leave good lace. Aroma of nice vanilla notes over the Scotch ale base. Taste is even more vanilla with a hint of coconut. Really pleasant.

Tap at speakeasy carrboro. Pours dark brown with a sticky, lightly weblike mocha tan head. Nose is slightly muted (but they always serve these beers too damn gold). Don’t get much vanilla or any of the regular peaty/malty old chub characteristics, but it’s pretty smooth and well constructed from what I can tell. Fine beer; but probably less complex and tasty than the regular old chub.

I'm not a huge vanilla fan as most are over the top but this one knocked it out of the park. Very drinkable!

Tap at Tasty Weasel. Murky chestnut brown with a bubbly beige head. Wonderful aroma of vanilla cake batter and Hershey’s chocolate bar. Flavor is wonderfully sweet with some delightful Hershey’s milk chocolate, vanilla cake, and a semi-dry finish of cocoa powder and biscuity chocolate, and more vanilla. Wow-wee.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cask. Sniffer pour. Aroma is mild vanilla, mostly caramel and sweet malt, light dark fruit. Flavor is much more intense. Vanilla all over, similar notes to regular Old Chub. Intense and nice. Dark caramel and burnt sugar. Lighter body, smooth and enjoyable.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Cask pour at World of Beer in Tampa Palms. Pours a rich looking dark chocolate brown color with a thin tan head. Beautiful webbed lacing along the glass. Notes of roasted malt, vanilla, molasses and raisin in the aroma. Smooth and delicious flavor. The 8% is more hidden than the standard Chub. Very nice.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Cask pour at Bavarian Lodge (Lisle, IL). Welcome to Chicago, Oskar Blues! Pours a rich deep brownish ruby hue, gentle haze, darker hues of mahogany, with glowing ruby edges. A frothy thicker tannish head atop dies to a firm layer, laces pretty well overall. Aromas are that telltale Old Chub base, carmelized malts, gentle toffee, and touches of red fruit. Some pretzel, a kiss of cocoa, and darker malts (but no roast). A subtle vanilla bean element wafts in a bit, mellow strength, a bit creamy, gentle toast with more red fruit, caramel, and gentle peated malt influences. Initial is medium bodied, perhaps a bit more firm with caramel and toffee, gentle toast and peat doing some work. Touches of red fruit, creamy sweetness at times with carmelization, vanilla elements coming in. I’d say the vanilla beans make this a bit more rich, smooth, and creamy. Some good flavor elements, the middle is a bit more bready, toasty, and malt driven. Touches of red fruit, peat, and vanilla, more toast and darker bready malts, caramel and toffee into the backend. Vanilla is cool and smooth, makes a bit more of an appearance back here as it, some toasty/carmelized qualities linger on in finish. Overall, I’d say the vanilla smooths this out a bit more, gets a bit luscious in the middle due to it, with some nice rounded flavors, creaminess. Still, fairly light and fluffy on the palate, not weighing you down. A pretty solid offering. I’ve always liked Old Chub and this beer reflects that. Similar, perhaps I’d give the overall edge to the regular though for imbibing sake, but both are quite nice. Enjoyable offering.

[4177-20111203] Tap. Mild roastiness and vanilla bean cocoa aroma. Clear, dark dark red body with a medium-lasting creamy tan head. Chocolatey malt flavour has a bitter vanilla thing going on. Full body. Tasty. (8/3/7/3/14) 3.5
