COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
American-style Barleywine. Still a youngster at this point (3 months), ODB has a long life ahead of it. At 13.2% abv and 100 IBU’s this ale will age for years and develop over time. Look for a straight forward spicy citrus character from the exclusive use of Columbus hops and the considerable alcohol with a subdued malt background. This is a work in progress and we look forward to seeing how it ages.

2009 vintage on tap @ the Common Table. Reddish brown brew with some tan head. Great nose of toffee, caramel, pine hops - flavor is very malty with some sweetness and a hop bite, especially as it warms.

Draft at Oskar blues, pours murky brown with white head. Nose of caramel, toasted malts, and raisin. Flavors have a big malty kick, loads of caramel, plums, and toasted nuts. Some oxidation coming off as port. Med body, strong bitterness finish and alcohol is in check. Not too shabby.

Deep amber/ruby with a cream head. Caramel, sweet malts, fresh better hops, faint citrus, and sticky. Thick and chewy palate, heavy syrup/caramel flavor, rich malts, hops are in the finish and slightly bitter.

2009 batch, served on tap at Oskar Blues in Longmont, CO. Pours a hazy bright chestnut with little head. Nose is nutty, sweet toffee and caramel, and still a good deal of hop presence. Taste is sweet but still pleasantly bitter, and it hides the alcohol well. Notes of sherry or brandy. Very good.

Tap @ Duckwaorths Charlotte, NC. Hazy copper pour with minimal head and retention. Aroma is hot, alcoholic and toffee (on the verge of being buttery but not) Body is surprisingly thin given the abv & the style parameters. Hot caramel, light oxidation and bourbon.

On tap @ Homemade Liquids and Solids. Looks like rusty copper/deep ruby. Smells like wet cedar wood, tart dark berries, some booze and light potpourri. Texture is silky smooth, but it impacts the palate pretty harshly. Booze makes a big warm hit, but before it is a nice sweet malt with huge citrusy hop wallop. A nice amount of light and dark fruit. Yeasty, fruity, overly boozy strong without much nuance or subtlety. Thick and chewy, hard to drink my sampler glass.

On tap at Churchkey. Reviewed from notes. Pours a brown color with a very slight head. No retention or lacing. Nose brings some caramel, dark fruits, light citrus, a WHOLE lot of alcohol. This is really, really boozy. The taste brings straight alcohol and a bit of miscellaneous fruits. The booze is really hard to get over, and is hard to forgive as it’s not a really tasty beer to begin with. Does not drink well. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 11-02-2010
