Tap at Churchkey.
A wise man once said, "the sign of a good beer is when you canít quite figure out all of its delicate flavors. If you can pick out all of the flavors in the aroma and taste, whereís the fun in that? If the beer smells and tastes like cinnamon, then it was probably made with cinnamon. Done. Youíve figured it out. Now on to the next beer. But with great beers, you are left wondering, guessing, wanting more. It is a journey and experience and worth trying over and over again."
This young barleywine has certainly accomplished this feat in the nose, which is endlessly complex if you give it a chance to warm up and develop. It poured a clear strawberry to orange with a healthy, one-finger, off-white to yellow head. Excellent webby lace everywhere. Nose is certainly fresh 3C hoppy, but there is also brown sugar sweetened ruby red grapefruit sections, fresh lime, tamarind candies, spicy tamarind, something like ionized air after a storm. As it warms the aroma develops full on fruit cake, that weird licorice candy you find in fruit cake, along with powerful/homemade ginger snaps. Taste is sweet, spicy, nice hoppiness that is not overwhelming, some gum drops, candy corn, no syrupy sweetness. 13% is not apparent. This is not a lacerative hop bomb. It is complex, chewy, refined. I hope it gets better with age but it is top notch already.

Lemme get that ODB! On tap at the falling rock for their barleywine month and listed as ODB. Dark caramel color and it smelled fantastic. Lots of toffee, hops, reminded me of Bigfoot a little, very rich. If this was 13% Abv i didnít notice it even though I knew it was burly.

2009 vintage on tap @ the Common Table.
Reddish brown brew with some tan head. Great nose of toffee, caramel, pine hops - flavor is very malty with some sweetness and a hop bite, especially as it warms.

Draft at Oskar blues, pours murky brown with white head. Nose of caramel, toasted malts, and raisin. Flavors have a big malty kick, loads of caramel, plums, and toasted nuts. Some oxidation coming off as port. Med body, strong bitterness finish and alcohol is in check. Not too shabby.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2009 batch, served on tap at Oskar Blues in Longmont, CO. Pours a hazy bright chestnut with little head. Nose is nutty, sweet toffee and caramel, and still a good deal of hop presence. Taste is sweet but still pleasantly bitter, and it hides the alcohol well. Notes of sherry or brandy. Very good.

Tap @ Duckwaorths Charlotte, NC. Hazy copper pour with minimal head and retention. Aroma is hot, alcoholic and toffee (on the verge of being buttery but not) Body is surprisingly thin given the abv & the style parameters. Hot caramel, light oxidation and bourbon.
