TampaBrew (746), Tampa, Florida, USA May 10, 2009 pours black. sweet malt, toffee, roasted malt nose. flavor is much the same as the nose with some booziness. BeerBaby (62), , Tennessee, USA May 8, 2009 From a can, gift from SpringsLIcker. Very little tan head which clears quickly leaving a lacing on the glass. Chocolate flavor with some bitterness... more bitterness than sweet. Alcohol taste very present with a bitter aftertaste. Not one of my favorite imperial stouts. To me, a bit unbalanced, but drinkable. Could be the beer was a bit past it’s prime. I would like to taste it on draft and in prime aging. tokyogoat (505), San Diego, California, USA May 7, 2009 This beer poured blacker than Samuel L Jackson and developed a perfect fingers head. I couldnt see bubbles in the swampy liquid, but carbonation was satisfactory.
The flavors hit you in the mouth instantly, and leave you just as quick, very standard flavor profile for an RIS, roasted coffee, dark chocolate notes, with an odd aftertaste.
I’m not that impressed and this beer doesnt really live up to the hype. evanrail (41), Prague, Czech Republic May 4, 2009 From a can courtesy of Fred Waltman at havebeerwilltravel.net. Even well-chilled, it has a powerful oily nose when poured, jet-black with a loose dark camel foam. In the mouth it is chocolate and chocolate-covered coffee beans, roasted malt and fresh dark rye bread. Very well-incorporated alcohol for 9.4%. Impressive. smcolw (314), Wayland, Massachusetts, USA May 3, 2009 It’s shocking to see such a dark liquid to come from a can. Nearly no head. And what is there dies to ring of bubbles on the edge. Virtually spotless lace. Near black, no lace.
Mild black patent malt aromas. Not as potent as I expected.
The flavor is an improvement on the smell. Oily body of a high-alcohol beer. Black patent malt flavors with notes of cherry and strawberry. Some hoppiness is present. Overall, this is a syrupy and malty beer where the bitterness comes from the burnt grains. Beardface (977), Eugene, Oregon, USA May 1, 2009 12 oz can from By the Bottle in Vancouver, WA. I had been looking forward to trying this one for a very long time and it was well worth the wait! Poured out black as the night with a thick oatmeal brown head that lasted for ages. Aroma is full of caramel malts, chocolate, coffee and the flavor is much the same, just malty and extremely delicious. Goes down smooth as silk as well. Amazing beer. AskForJenny (627), Ontario, New York, USA Apr 30, 2009 12oz can - Poured a viscous, oily black, very little carbonation, small head. Roasted marshmallow nose. Good flavor, but truly lacking the layers of a Stone IRS. The can was a change. yobdoog (1426), Woodridge NY, New York, USA Apr 29, 2009 This is a huge brew, not for a can, just in general. Aroma is roasty, coffee, cocoa and nice hops. Very big, alcohol is noticable. Taste has some bitterness from hops and some from dark roasted malts. rich body and really good.
