zappafan99 (462), Ascension Island Feb 4, 2009 Taste 2/9 Can. Looks: Dark and opaque w/tan head. Aroma: Nice mild dark fruit with the roasted and toasted malt bitter coffee and chocolate. Taste: To style, nothing off and nothing fabulous. Good and smooth. Seems to have a freshness. Quite drinkable with little alcohol taste. Dmalone102 (216), Denver, Colorado, USA Feb 3, 2009 Updated: Mar 27, 2009Got a growler of this at their new tasting room in Longmont, "The Tasty Weasel".
Aroma- Oaky esters, dark cherries, slight roastiness, verry woody, some fusel alcohol. It’s what I like an aroma from a dark beer to smell like.
Appearance- Murky, no clarity, very dark brown. There is a decent ammount of brown head. Moderate lacing.
Flavor- Chocolatey goodness. Medium to moderate roastiness, but not burnt and/or overbearing. Bitterness is present, and does more than balance, but again, is not obtuse. The malt flavors balance each other, with chocolate, oak, and roast...phenominal.
Palate- Full body, medium carbonation, and I’m pleased that the hop dryness at the end is subdued. Velvetty soft.
Overall Impression- Anyone can make an intense Imperial Stout, but this is one that’s very easy to drink, while still being able to appreciate the complexity.
timsilvia32 (445), from Michigan now in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA Feb 1, 2009 Poured black, very opaque with ruby around the top edge. Just about zero head, just a few brown bubbles. Roasted malt, roasty coffee, chocolate and port aromas, excellent. Real nice full body, forms a film on the sides of the glass as I tilt it. Roasty malt, coffee and bakers chocolate flavors, the smell doesn’t lie. Finish clean with some lingering cafe mocha. Drinkable, with the alcohol non-existant. A big beer with a nice balance of malt and hops. The only thing I would say could improve this would be slightly more carbonation, which could make it more creamy than oily. Still deserving of the good reviews. In the top 10 non-barrel aged Imperial Stouts. watson1977 (250), , Pennsylvania, USA Feb 1, 2009 very nice looking beer! thick pitck black with a huge foamy dark mocha head. alcohol is noticeable in the aroma...it takes over notes of coffee, roasted chocolate, and licorice. flavor is of anise and dark fruit, fig, bakers chocolate, coffee, and citrus. very complex. mouthfeel is creamy but not too heavy with a long lingering roasty espresso finish. ubamartian (155), Watertown, Wisconsin, USA Feb 1, 2009 Wow. This was good. Had a tap at Three Cellars. Pour was black as night, almost no head. Aroma is mainly roasted malt and a hint of chocolate. I cannot taste the alcohol it’s hidden very well. It is very balanced, with mainly the roasted and chocolate notes you would expect from a stout. Yum. It was delicious. I couldn’t drink more than two in a session, but I could drink this often. jvmiller (532), Bel Air, Maryland, USA Jan 31, 2009 Holy cow this stuff pours thick. Extremely thick on the palate, almost unpleasantly so. Very chewy. Milkshake is a good comparison. A little one-note as far as i’m concerned- chocolate, and very roasty-bitter on the finish. Lacking complexity. Maybe I shouldn’t have drank this when I was full. carboloader (318), Houston, Texas, USA Jan 30, 2009 I bought this having no idea what it was -- simply something new that I had not rated before. It’s in a can...how good could it be? Imagine my surprise when this stuff pours out indeed looking like motor oil from a diesel truck. No head whatsoever. viscous and opaque. I sip. I can’t even taste the alcohol, but the malts are deliciously deep, rich, and smooth. I also can’t identify the IBUs -- everything is so nicely balanced. 10 minutes later, I’m buzzing like I just sipped some moonshine. Only then do I realize the wonder of this creation. Call me thoroughly impressed. This is one for winter, to be slipped graciously slow and coddled like a warm and toasty blanket in an ice storm. Try it. You will more than like it. handsomejn (26), Arkansas, USA Jan 30, 2009 Thick on the palate. Nearly black in color with a frothy dark brown top. The taste is like chocolate oatmeal only chewier. The alcohol is well hidden, warmth and aftertaste of bourbon are the clues.
