Apperance: Dark as a black hole with a good sized, brown, head. A bit of lacing too.
aroma: Milkchocolate (lots!), Coffee, Roasted malts, Grain.
Flavor: Chocolate, Bitter coffee, Dark caramel, Hint of vanilla.
Palate: Extremely thick and robust. Medium carbonation. Initial feeling is sweet and intense but at the end you feel the 98 ibu’s kicking in and balacing it out.
First imperial stout in a can i’ve tried and what a great start. I am lucky 2 have a couple of more of these sitting in my fridge. Recommended!
jzzbassman (838), New Albany, Mississippi, USA Jan 11, 2009 Wow does this look great...oil can blac with a nice tan head. Big aroma of licorice, alcohol, and cocoa. Nice flavor of malted milk balls, coffee, and well disguised alcohol. Velvety smooth....just a killer brew. 502Flavors (617), Louisville, Kentucky, USA Jan 11, 2009 12 oz. can into snifter - served at cellar temp: 50F. Thanks for this one Daknole! Looks so weird cracking a can and seeing black beer. Easy 5 on appearance - pith black thick oily pour with a dark dark brown mocha head that holds and laces. This is one of the better looking imperial stouts I have seen to date. Aroma is typical good imperial stout with hints of burnt malt, wood, chocolate, vanilla, some dark cherries, molasses, and a bigger hop character than I expected. The flavor is good, just not as complex and robust as the aroma. Its astringent and bitter with some bitter dark chocolate, tobacco smoke, and coffee notes - if you smoke cigars or pipes this would go great with a robust dark tobacco blend. Full bodied with minimal carbonation on the palate, which is just what I want in the style. Overall: I hav been turned off very recently by imperial stouts. It was the first style to really appeal to me and I sort of burnt myself out on them, and then I discovered lambics and sours. This has revitalized my faith in the style though. Very nice brew for the winter months. zach8270 (2053), Henrietta, New York, USA Jan 11, 2009 (can - 12 oz) Dark black pour with a huge and puffy tan head. Aroma is rich and roasty with lots of burnt malts, caramel, coffee, and some anise. Flavor is loaded with roasted and toasted malts, coffee, chocolate, dark fruits, cream, and some bitterness at the very end. Thick and chewy and outstanding. Braudog (3733), Dayton, Ohio, USA Jan 11, 2009 I first tried this at GABF 2007 and loved it. Finally, cans made their way to Virginia late in 2008. This is thick and dark as oil, and my visiting parents gasped with amazement when I poured it. Thick and viscuous, this is a visual delight. It drinks with a strong and potent chewy licorice essence, and an underlying bitter chocolate thang. This is some good shite. (#3476, 11/2008)
kiefdog (1567), Tampa, Florida, USA Jan 10, 2009 12oz can from Whole Foods (Tampa, FL). Pours a viscous dark black color with thick and creamy tan head that settles slowly and laces the glass. Aroma is sweet and malty with strong notes of dark chocolate, slightly roasted notes, heavy cream, ripe dark fruit some floral hop notes. Flavor is roasted and malty with strong dark chocolate notes, ripe black cherries, sugar plums, coffee, toffee and sweet caramel. Generally full bodied with a pleasing phenol and coffee finish. ansermadide (496), Kyle, Texas, USA Jan 8, 2009 12oz can at home on January 9, 2009 from Yellow Store. Popped the top (sorry, no psshht), poured like dirty motor oil into my glass. GORGEOUS! Aaaaah... now I know why they call it 10W-50! Quite a head on this sucker, great shade of brown. This beer is solid. Not even a glow, a glare, a shimmer of any color at the bottom edge of the glass. Aroma is much like a thick and hearty stout, but not over-flavored like some imperial stouts can be. Simple, straightforward, and manly. Mouthfeel is pretty thick. You can definitely pull out cocoa, malt, and a little coffee from the flavor... and is rings a little of oats. A great, solid beer. LOVE the fact that OB does the can thing. So great. Especially when it’s so hard to find a good beer to take out on the lake or river when bottles are prohibited. I mean, not like I’ll be drinking this on the river while tubing in the mid-summer Texas heat, but I suppose it’s an option. ChetLemmons (87), orlando, Florida, USA Jan 4, 2009 1/4/09
pint glass
*first rated beer of 2009!
looked like a can of oil, pouring into my glass. was not very carbonated, which led to a very thin chocolate milk looking head. looked great, but more like a desert. very dark chocolate aroma, with very subtle hints of malt. was not as smooth as i would have prefered and was pretty thick. would be better poured over vanilla ice cream, and you could catch a buzz while you drank it! over all it was just a little too intense for me. i enjoyed it, but luckily enough i only bought one.
