JasonG (700), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Nov 27, 2008 12 oz can - pours a totally opaque black color with smallish dark brown head w/ red highlights. Aroma is full of toasted caramel, hazelnuts, roasted molasses, raisens, ash, figs, highland scotch. Flavor is full of roasted malts, caramel, touch of cherry, dry ash, herbal hops, with a bracing and slightly metallic bitterness. A very nice brew overall. The metallic note at the finish is the only downside. I think that this would be stellar if laid down for a couple of years. DYCSoccer17 (2187), Davis, California, USA Nov 26, 2008 12 ounce can purchased at the Davis Food Co-Op. Aroma has a very nice balance of sweet chocolate along with some molasses and some roastiness that is coffee-like. Very pleasant. Body is a thick, oily, opaque black color with a nice brown head, nice lacing, and nice legging. Very attractive brew. The flavor of this mirrors the aroma...some sweet chocolate flavors present themselves up front. This is followed by some roasted, burnt, coffee-like flavoring. Light leather notes. Ethanol is hidden well. This is very silky, smooth, and dangerously drinkable. I can see why this is so highly rated. TearsforBeers (171), Ohio, USA Nov 21, 2008 Thanks to ucusty for this little can of awesome.
Pours an almost appallingly opaque thick black with almost an inch of impenetrable light brown head, leaves thick lacing and huge legs.
Smells like soy sauce, sweet dark roasted malts, and alcohol, as an RIS should, but not as complex as the taste
Taste is complex, starts with sweet dark roasted malts, definitely some high L caramel malts in there, balanced by hops, moves to a more bitter salty taste, and finishes warming the back of the tongue with bitterness.
Mouthfeel is moderately thick, coats the mouth - very nice.
This is a great beer. Perfect for a cold night after hard work. The flavor is very good, but not quite as tongue-numbingly awesome as my top favorites. BeerFanDan17 (610), Land O Lakes, Florida, USA Nov 20, 2008 Wow--this is serious. This imperial stout is incredible. Roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and malt. Black as night with a creamy head. Really unique and quite tasty. Tejas (693), Dallas, Texas, USA Nov 20, 2008 Updated: Nov 21, 2008I’m sorta over the whole big beer/imp stout thing, even in the winter, so i have trouble getting excited about these. Having said that, this is pretty f’ing solid. Little alcohol taste and lots of roasty flavors. Super chocolatey and creamy to boot. mjg74 (1995), La Mesa, California, USA Nov 20, 2008 Can, picked up at Beverages 4 Less. Pours thick and black, like motor oil. I’ve never had a canned brew that poured like that before. Pitch black in my glass. Strong roasted malty aroma. Some alcohol is present, along with some vanilla and black licorice. Slick oily mouthfeel. Flavor is roasted malts and coffee. Somewhat bitter malty/coffee finish. Solid impy stout. tgncc (796), Bellmore, New York, USA Nov 19, 2008 I was on line for Oskar Blues at Brewtopia 2008, and they ran out of this before I even got up there, in the first 15 minutes of the festival.
Awesome aroma: roasted coffee, chocolate, malts and a whiff of alcohol. The appearnce, true to its style, is a beautiful brown/black, chestnut brown head. The flavor is roasted coffee, cappucino, oats. Very thick, chewy mouthfeel. The finish is slight warming from alcohol, but a substantial bittering, from both the roasted malts, and the hops. Starts out sweet, finishes bitter. Very nice effort. djd07 (724), Houston, Texas, USA Nov 19, 2008 On tap at Flying Saucer. Has a dark brown with a large tan head that lasts awhile. The aroma is a very sweet roasted malt and chocolate. Good sticky lacing on the glass. The taste is a rich roasted malt, coffee, and oats. Hides the alcohol well, a very impressive Imperial Stout from Oskar Blues.
