BigBeer45 (676), Troy, Michigan, USA Oct 8, 2008 Pours pitch black into the glass, not much ruby is seen or am I able to see through this ale at the edges of the glass, gave a small tan bubble head that looks like a milk chocolate shake, swirling leaves a oily film on the sides of the glass, aromas of roasted and dark roasted malt, chocolate, some hints of burnt malt, some wood scents along with an alcohol (bourbon barrel aged?) aroma that reminds me of the Goose Island Bourbon County Stout(?), not quite as prominent as the BCS but it is there, faint bitter coffee fragrances in the background, prominent dark roasted malt flavors with bitter chocolate and some dark roasted coffee beans, appears to have roasted malt bitterness and hop bitterness that shows up at the finish along with some alcohol warmth that trails the drink, mouth feel is rather thick and has a nice creamy feel on the palate, this ale has a great mouth feel, this drink coats the throat and residual bitterness and dark roasted malt flavor hangs around. This is a big roasted malt flavored Impy with chocolate and coffee flavors, Oskar Blues says this is brewed with 98 IBUs, there is a lot of hop bitterness but it does not appear to be that much, maybe the heavy malt flavors hide the hops (?) If you like big dark roasted malt Imperial that coats and soothes the throat I recommend trying this Imperial, a very nice drink. lithy (1600), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA Oct 8, 2008 Pitch black body with a thick finger of dark tan head with nice retention. Nice spotty lacing. Very roasty, chocolate aroma. Bitter roasty malt notes, slight coffee and chocolate underneath and a powerfully bitter finish. Very nice beer (from a can!) Big time palate buster. darkguardian (506), Florida, USA Oct 7, 2008 12oz can. Pours a deep black with a rich chocolate head. Nose has some serious coffee and chocolate and a little smoke. This is a huge beer with a massive flavor profile. Some light coffee up front but not roasty, only very light coffee bean notes, gives way to a rich super smooth almost silky chocolate finish with hints of vanilla and oak and a nice oatiness. Low bitterness but this is definitely a sipper. Alcohol such as it is being fairly well hidden the mouthfeel keeps it firmly in the sipping category. chicagodri (1021), Chicago, Illinois, USA Oct 7, 2008 Thanks BOLTZ7555 for the awesome trade. First of all, I love the fact that a great Imperial Stout comes out of a can...fantastic. Pours black with a thin tan head. Aroma of roast malt, chocolate, and a little coffee. Heavy chocolate flavor as well, little bit of bitterness at the end. Alcohol is evident, but it is very good. I might have to try some of their other stuff. clong83 (243), San Diego, California, USA Oct 7, 2008 Another outstanding selection from what is quickly becoming one of my favorite brewers. Low carbonation, pours a opaque black with a dark tan mild head. Nice nose of alcohol, with some roasted malts evident as well, but actually fairly mild. The taste is jam packed with rich chocolatey and coffee like flavors, with some nice spice undertones. Hides the alcohol, but has a nice warming effect. Toasted malts are also evident. Very complex, but well-balanced. sbybeerguy (2), California, USA does not count Oct 4, 2008 lucky enough to have it on tap at beachwood bbq in seal beach, california. being a big stout lover, i was anxious to give this one a whirl. a beautiful, thick almost black liquid with a slight caramelized head. aroma was wonderful with a lot going on. alcohol was present but not overwhelming (like avery’s mephistopholes). beautiful notes of coffee and chocolate. one of the best imperial stouts i’ve had.... ilovedarkbeer (1326), Dallas, Texas, USA Oct 3, 2008 Can courtesy of BMan1113VR.. Pours slowly like thick motor oil that forms a black body with a reddish dark brown head. Nose is like my old humidor. Cedar and tobacco with some booze. Some of my favorite scents. Even when you swirl the body makes a sticky brown residue that creeps down the glass. Mouthfeel is medium to heavy and seems to thicken up as it warms. Tastes like dark chocolate, java, and malted milk. Pretty dang good. BMan1113VR (2757), Los Angeles (and Dallas), Texas, USA Oct 2, 2008 Bottle from Liquor max. An inky, thick pour, with a small, dark brown head. Completely black body. Alcohol legs, and some odd, spotty, complete lacing. Aroma is a bit weak, with alcohol, malt, light smoke and cedar and a bit roasty. Taste is malty, and roasty, a bit of rochefort, caramel and coffee. I find it a bit thin like all Oskar Blues beers. There is also a choclate milkshake/malt taste when it warms aswell, alcohol evident. Light carbonation.
