17thfloor (1403), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jul 2, 2008 Pours thick oily black with a mocha creamy head. Crazy aroma, molasses, creamy chocolate, coffee, porter like roast quality, some vanilla. Dark and roasty!!! Burnt coffee flavor, milky and dark chocolate. Good pine hop bite. Long roast coffee and dark chocolate finish. Super creamy body with some smooth bubbly carbonation. Becomes a little one-note after a while and pretty sugary. This is great... but with some cherries... or whiskey barrel it would be amazing! Nejhleader (924), Lemoyne, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 1, 2008 tap at mcgraths. Great beer, wierd this would be in a can. anyway nice dark colour with a brownish head, creamy body, has a nice flavour, a little bit roasted, a little chocolate and some good malt, yummy. hapjydeuce (763), Del Mar, California, USA Jul 1, 2008 Updated: Jul 18, 2008On tap at the San Diego County Fair Craft Beer Festival. Damn this beer is viscous! Pitch black color, with a light ring of maroon head. Aroma is packed with smoky wood tones, tons of roasted chocolate malt and coffee bean. All around a great flavor profile, starting with sweet molasses and rich dark chocolate, ending with bitter espresso and a bit of cherry. Outstanding body, covering the mouth with an oily character. Nice! I bet this stuff aged in bourbon oak would be straight-up epic! GregClow (2493), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Jul 1, 2008 Updated: Jul 5, 2008Growler shared at ’Biegaman’s Second Annual Saison Tasting’ - courtesy of jerc. Deep brown-black with a small dark tan head. Aroma of burnt malt, coffee and cocoa nibs. Big, full mouthfeel, a bit sticky in the finish. Flavour of charred roast malt, over-roasted coffee, astringent hops - pretty overpowering, but still enjoyable. Hangover (764), Atlanta, USA Jul 1, 2008 Absolutely black pour with a thin but lasting brownish head. Roasted malt, licorice and a deep chocolate aroma. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy. Flavor has a lot of chocolate up front which leads to a faint vanilla/milk chocolate middle. Body becomes a bit thicker towards the finish as the roastiness creeps up, hints of coffee. Finishes bitter, lingering coffee and chocolate. Easy drinking, I wouldnt have guessed 10% abv. Excellent. For a canned brew its freaking awesome. sersdf (1000), chicago, Illinois, USA Jun 30, 2008 can, thanks to myself. looks perfect, pitch black, crude oil thickness (i assume it’s rather thick), very dark brown thin film of head. very pretty. smells from pretty far away. smells pretty alcoholic, pretty strong chocolate undertones, maybe a little chalky. taste is pretty sweet and chocolatey. not super malty. a little chalky, and even a bit hoppy. sticky, soy sauce. decent, not incredible. carruthm (1112), Seattle, Washington, USA Jun 29, 2008 V - pours dark dark black. Never seen a darker pour on a thick beer. Deep tan smallish head.
A - smoke, roasted malts, dark chocolate
T - malts that give way to a little alcoholic/bitter kick fading into a slight coffee/bitter taste which quickly mellows
P - good balance showcasing a variety of flavors. Silphium (2114), Haslett, Michigan, USA Jun 29, 2008 Can via trade with brokephibroke. Deep opaque brown-black body, thick, dense medium brown head. Aroma of rich roasted malts, coffee, and chocolate, with hints of molasses and bitter hops. Creamy, soft body, with vinous notes adding a sweet, tannic characteristic to the swirl of coffee, chocolate, dry roast, and soy. There is a chewy, soft sweetness to the body, reminiscent of red licorice or strawberries, that brings back memories of trying Thirsty Dog’s Siberian Night IS for the first time on tap. The bitter, astringent hops do assert themselves in the finish, pairing with alcohol notes, leading to a slight burn that, if reduced, would yield something even more rewarding than this already fantastic beer. Beers like this are great reminders of why the craft beer industry is hopping, so to speak...
