blazingspiral (39), Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA Jun 10, 2008 The blackest, thickest, scariest. It oozes slowly out of the can and into the glass. There it sits, with a small brown head, thinking dark thoughts about you, and proudly emitting an aroma of burnt and roasted things. The texture of this stout in your mouth is like the rich soil in the deepest, dankest part of an ancient forest. It tastes as hoppy and malty as any brew could ever taste. Rich chocolate and strong coffee come out on top, with a hefty amount of bitter hops to round it out. Drink with caution, and reverence. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jun 9, 2008 In short: Above average Imperial Stout. Biscuit and milk-chocolate.
How: Can, 12oz. From <insert your name here>. I received many of these in different trades (mostly bonuses) from probably 5 or 6 people, you know who you are. Thanks to you all guys, I’ll drink them all then I’ll need some more.
The look: Black body with a small tan head
In long: Very full body. Malt profile is very much biscuit. Flavours of Milk chocolate, cacao, more milk chocolate, woody/earthy notes, some vanilla, rather floury, more milk chocolate, a little alcohol bite in the end. Above average for the style but IMHO this beer is a bit overrated. Although nowadays to me Over-Hype American Imperial Stouts is anything but an oxymoron. jcwattsrugger (5223), Florida and, New Jersey, USA Jun 9, 2008 12oz can-pours a brown ring for a head that dissipates and black color. Aroma is dark malt-anise/licorice. Taste is dark malt-tar/anise/licorice. Occasional. Thanks to springslicker for sharing. blklab2007 (938), Connecticut, USA Jun 8, 2008 Updated: Jul 12, 200912 oz. can poured into a snifter has a pitch black dark color with no light coming through and a very dark brown frothy head that fell to a spidery thin layer. aroma has chocolate malt, oats, coffee, and alcohol. mouth feel is thick and coating with little carbonation. flavor is thick chocolate malt, roasted coffee, molasses, and licorice. there is some bitterness like coffee grinds and some resin that must come from the hops seeing there is 98 ibu’s in here. incredibly chewy and fantastic for a canned imperial stout but not the best i have tried. heemer77 (4294), Savannah, Missouri, USA Jun 8, 2008 Even though this ended up all over my shirt at Noogfest ’08, I still enjoyed it. the body was perfectly black with an orangeish colored head. The aroma was chocolate with some pancakes. There was also some bread crust. The taste had some sweet chocolate and pancakes. There was also some nice roasted coffee. Butters (1622), Virginia, USA Jun 7, 2008 Updated: Apr 19, 2009Wow. A good imperial stout from a can! Pours like motor oil with a solid brown head and great legs. Very chocolatey and roasty aroma with a hint of alcohol. Alcohol comes out in flavor as it warms but initially malty and roasty, and some toffee. Palate is creamy but the abv stings the tongue ever so slightly. I’m already a fan of Dale’s Pale Ale, and now this offering from Oskar Blues makes me a believer in the almighty can. joekinty (263), rockledge, Florida, USA Jun 3, 2008 remind me of pouring oil out of an old quaker oil can some chocolate lots of malt roasted slight coffee good but not great duke33 (56), Eldersburg, Maryland, USA Jun 2, 2008 Probably the best beer in a can that I’ve ever had. As far as imperial stouts go, it was good, but I have to wonder if people give it a high ranking b/c of it being in a can? There are much better imperial stouts out there (like Old Rasputin or Victory Storm King). But, it was still very good.
On another note, this was probably the darkest that I have ever seen a beer pour. It looked like molasses, and it probably had the darkest head that I’ve ever seen as well.
