duke33 (56), Eldersburg, Maryland, USA Jun 2, 2008 Probably the best beer in a can that I’ve ever had. As far as imperial stouts go, it was good, but I have to wonder if people give it a high ranking b/c of it being in a can? There are much better imperial stouts out there (like Old Rasputin or Victory Storm King). But, it was still very good.
On another note, this was probably the darkest that I have ever seen a beer pour. It looked like molasses, and it probably had the darkest head that I’ve ever seen as well. estoppel (1028), Buffalo, New York, USA Jun 2, 2008 Updated: Jul 12, 2008Draft. Black body, brown head, sweet malty nose with roasty notes. Less flavor than I expected, with sweetness and roast, slight sourness. Hides alcohol well. RERATE 7/08: Can. Sort of burnt flavor from too much roasted barley/black malt. I guess I am getting really sick of these American examples of Russian Imperial Stout, and am taking it out on them one example at a time. Jukkabro (2983), Tampere, Finland Jun 2, 2008 Black colored, little dark brown head. Strongly roasted and sweet aroma with mild smoke and coffee, some salty licorice also present. Medium to full bodied. Flavor has stronger licorice with still roastiness dominating, some sweet berries also here. Aftertaste turns to dry hopped, Snojerk321 (1919), San Diego, California, USA Jun 2, 2008 12oz can from Acknud. When I started to pour this beer, I thought I just opened a can of 10w30.......holy crap was it black! Amazing head that started off very dark brown, then lightened up as the beer warmed. Big aromas of chocolate, toffee, oak, smoke, and fresh ground coffee. Nice smooth, creamy mouth feel. Thanks for this one man!! MaltDawg (778), Richmond, Virginia, USA Jun 1, 2008 12 oz can. Very dark almost black with medium creamy persistent dark tan head.
Roast and chocolate malt nose with big aroma of citrusy hops. Rich creamy mouthfeel starts with roast malts, raisin, maybe a touch of smokiness. Warming alchohol and hop bitterness in the finish with some lingering hop bitterness. WOW. zebracakes (1214), Washington DC, USA May 31, 2008 Can purchased at D’s Six Pax. There was black dirt on the top of the can that I had to wash off. It almost made me wonder if Oskar put it there for effect. ;)
Pours tar, more tar than I ever expected to come from a beer can (oil can, yes), thin tan head. Aroma is chocolate, malt, anise, strawberries, vanilla, coffee (almost like icecream). Flavor is same with dry bitterness yet the body is super super oily. This is a meal in itself! Dang!
Uh, and now I feel dumb because I just caught the meaning of the name of the beer, duh motor oil. Five minute rule, I guess. Ofortuna (322), Grafton, Wisconsin, USA May 30, 2008 Many thanks to CaptainCougar for the incredible act of generosity!
Zero head with very low carbonation representative of the style. Truely like the name implies in regards to appearance. Nice deep aromas of raisins and dark roasted grains. That raisin character really had some similarities of Big Eddy Imperial Stout. Intense bitterness no doubt from the hops and dark speciality malt. That and the fact that this is a relatively young can. Flavour is dominated by bittersweet chocolate and espresso. Gigantic roasted malt flavour. Reminded me a bit of Thirsty Dog Siberian Night. Very well done, but the one thing that kept it from being unbelievable is the viscosity in my opinion. A tad thinner than I was expecting (about a nano-meter short), but still with a very pleasant mouthfeel. Slight amount of fusels on the back-end most likely due to the young age. A year of additional aging on this would really bring this to the next level. Still worth searching out for. mgermani (862), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada May 30, 2008 How unusual - a can! I popped the lid and there was absolutely no hiss - uh oh... nice deep brown head, though, and gentle, almost imperceptible carbonation. Head dissipates to something resembling a perfectly pulled shot of espresso. Aroma is dried dates, alcohol, & dark molasses. Tastes so deliciously roasty! Very present alcohol, dark chocolate and light coffee, with a silky smooth quality that I can only attribute to the oats. Unbelievably thick, which earns it a solid 5 despite carbonation being on the lowest possible end of the scale. What a pleasant surprise this beer was, especially considering it was thrown in as an extra by TheCheeseMan - many thanks!
