BigBen2120 (688), Derry, New Hampshire, USA Aug 17, 2009 12oz can obtained at The Liquor Shoppe in Tygsboro, MA. Pours a completely opaque black with a half inch of short-lived tan head. Roasty dark chocolate, coffee, toast, date, hints of nut, brown sugar, toffee; the slightest hint of alcohol toward the end. Toast, dark chocolate, coffee, and toffee hit the palate right away, with some brown sugar, burnt, dark roasted coffee, toffee nut, and date, along with just the slightest tinge of alcohol warming dominate the exceptionally long finish for this beer. Rich full mouthfeel without being too viscous or syrupy, with light to medium carbonation. While this is definitely a sipper (true to style), one sip most definitely invites another one due to the complexity and tastiness. I am literally floored by this beer. It more than lives up to the hype. Possibly the best RIS I have ever had the pleasure of drinking, this beer is practically perfect in every way. and in a can to boot! Absolutely stellar. l1br4r14n (274), Washington, Washington DC, USA Aug 17, 2009 Huge roasted malt flavors dominate, along with chocolate and nicely balanced sweet/bittterness. However it is pretty boozy, both in the aroma and the flavor. dnstone (135), , New Jersey, USA Aug 11, 2009 A wicked good beah! This beer has the best appearance of any beer I have tried; pitch black with a dark nicely formed head. It smells like brownies and tastes like dark chocolate-covered espresso beans. There is a slight undertone that iI cant put my finger on; slightly metalic tasting, perhaps from the can? Either way I enjoy the fact that someone has finally canned a truely great beer. Id love to try it from a whiskey barrel. wavers1 (111), novato, California, USA Aug 4, 2009 wowza. worth the hype. thank god for oscar blues IDGAF attitude! it smells like licorice and burning motor oil, and tastes sweet like some sort of poison with a slight astringent finish. awesome for sneaking into baseball games and the like! gsmitty80 (628), Washington DC, USA Aug 2, 2009 This beer is amazing. It pours like oil out of the can and smacks you in the face with a high alcohol smell. Surprisingly well balanced and easy to drink...for what it is. Avengedpoet (325), Mesa, Arizona, USA Jul 26, 2009 Ten Fidy from a can in a Stone RIS snifter. Pours super thick and viscous with a really voluminous, sticky chocolate milk-colored head. Aroma of deep malt complexity, alcohol, hops, and loads of roasty goodness. Slight bitter roasted twinge on the back of the palate. Lots of malt and hop complexity comes through - dark fruits, chocolate, coffee, charcoal. World class. probstk (1005), Nepean, Ontario, Canada Jul 26, 2009 12 fl. oz can from BOTW (a guess because I’ve had it for a while in the cellar), served at cellar temp in a Maudite snifter.
App.: The deepest and darkest of blacks with a very deep mocha head. Looks very thick and heavy.
Aroma: Quite fruity, lots of dark dried fruits but also some tart berries, vinous, alcohol is evident, some pine notes, some dark chocolate and black coffee, espresso, some organic acids.
Palate: Full body, oily, velvety and smooth, luscious.
Flav.: The tangy fruit and organic acids are up front, with stern dark chocolate (very high cocoa content) behind that, the pine and resinous hops is a bit more apparent that on the nose, a little cardboard maybe; on swallowing, a warming wash of alcohol, some of the pine hops, dry with fairly high bitterness that is more on the sides of the tongue, maybe due to the acidity?, lingers for a long time like good dark chocolate.
This is certainly a big beer. Not quite there for me, would have liked more “sweet” aromas and flavours somehow...
