Bhops (329), Dallas, Texas, USA May 3, 2008 Pours black with dark tan head. Head is not huge but it sticks aorund. Roasted malt/sweet chocolate aroma hits you in the face. I can smell this beer from across the room. You can smell the alcohol too. tastes like a dessert liquor, rich and creamy with chocolate and coffee notes. Nice hoppy bite becomes apparent at the end. hiddenvariable (194), pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA May 3, 2008 pours deep dark black, with a thinnish, bubbly, brown head that doesn’t fade. wonderful deep roasted malt aroma, with a lot of coffee character, and a ton of bitter chocolate backing it all up. some hop character in the smell as well, but it’s completely overpowered by the malts. good times! the taste is straight up roasty goodness, with the chocolate notes more subdued, but kicking in at the end. light spicy hop note (sort of like what i always seem to get from cascade) adds to the goodness. thick as all get-out and silky smooth, quite full in the body (its personal ad would call it "curvy"), with a solid bitterness to challenge the malt sweetness, and some light warming. really quite good. best beer i’ve had out of a can? yeah. i like my stouts roasty and this one delivered that and more. AR (417), Georgia, USA May 2, 2008 Very black, opaque pour with a brown head. The initial taste is that of a dark chocolate. As you continue, the hop flavors step out and mix with the chocolate malt flavor. Nice beer. JPDIPSO (4865), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA May 2, 2008 Near black, looks like the spent oil from a diesel engine, albeit thinner. Creamy cocoa colored, tight bubbled head. Thin sheet of lace coats the side of the glass. Big hops aroma. I’m catching mostly grapefruit, Hints of dark malt and chocolate, but otherwise a PNW imperial stout. Somewhat oily in feel, but the alcohol in the finish makes it seem thinner. Sweet flavors with dark chocolate, lightly roasted malts, and sweet espresso. The hops are not nearly as prevalent in the flavors with just a mild zest kick in the middle to finish. Some charcoal and oak in the middle as well. This does get smoother as it warms. Still a touch of alcohol in the late finish. Linger is quite bitter with roasted and black malt. Good stuff. Certainly the best imperial stout in a can that I have had. Aurelius (2643), Tallahassee, Florida, USA May 1, 2008 Updated: May 15, 2008Rating No. 2400. Roast chickory, nuts and lightly fruity aroma -- artificial watermelon? I didn’t really enjoy the aroma, which I’m sure drags this brew down in my Pantheon of Cerveza. Bad can, pours like spent motor oil, maybe darker. Micro-fine tan head. Sipping this, I have a feeling akin to having had my wallet lifted. I don’t know if I’ve been shot, smurfed or snakebit. Smoooooth. Very smooth - harmonious, but there’s a lot going on. Bitter enough, but it’s masked. The ABV is certainly masked. Only quibbling flaw is that it’s a tad astringent. Finish is bitter with parched cereal. Extremely good. Market Square Liquors. SQNfan (591), Wheaton, Illinois, USA May 1, 2008 Poured from can. This was black in color with very fine brown bubbles that dissipate quickly. The nose is quite hoppy with grapefruit clearly poking out along with dark chocolate. The grapefuit edge makes this very strange for me. There is more of the same in the mouth with the grapefruit, sour cherry and dark chocolate lingering to a bitter finish. HenrikSoegaard (4263), Randers, Denmark May 1, 2008 Can. Creamy brown excellent fully lasting head. Black colour. Heavy malty and hoppy aroma. Heavy bitter flavor, vanila, coffee and chocolate notes. Long nice bitter finish. Creamy palate. Excellent beer. tronraner (1906), Maryville, Tennessee, USA Apr 30, 2008 Can. Pours completely opaque black with smallish tan head. The aroma is prune, chocolate, espresso, black cherry, and red wine. The flavor is mostly bitter chocolate, but there is a very assertive espresso tone as well. There is also a sweet maltiness and lots of dark fruits. The finish has a fair amount of bitterness to it, in a somewhat tannic way that eventually comes across as earthy. Alcohol comes out in the aftertaste. This is quite good, and I’m enjoying it more with every sip.
