Avengedpoet (325), Mesa, Arizona, USA Jul 26, 2009 Ten Fidy from a can in a Stone RIS snifter. Pours super thick and viscous with a really voluminous, sticky chocolate milk-colored head. Aroma of deep malt complexity, alcohol, hops, and loads of roasty goodness. Slight bitter roasted twinge on the back of the palate. Lots of malt and hop complexity comes through - dark fruits, chocolate, coffee, charcoal. World class. probstk (1011), Nepean, Ontario, Canada Jul 26, 2009 12 fl. oz can from BOTW (a guess because I’ve had it for a while in the cellar), served at cellar temp in a Maudite snifter.
App.: The deepest and darkest of blacks with a very deep mocha head. Looks very thick and heavy.
Aroma: Quite fruity, lots of dark dried fruits but also some tart berries, vinous, alcohol is evident, some pine notes, some dark chocolate and black coffee, espresso, some organic acids.
Palate: Full body, oily, velvety and smooth, luscious.
Flav.: The tangy fruit and organic acids are up front, with stern dark chocolate (very high cocoa content) behind that, the pine and resinous hops is a bit more apparent that on the nose, a little cardboard maybe; on swallowing, a warming wash of alcohol, some of the pine hops, dry with fairly high bitterness that is more on the sides of the tongue, maybe due to the acidity?, lingers for a long time like good dark chocolate.
This is certainly a big beer. Not quite there for me, would have liked more “sweet” aromas and flavours somehow... AndreasJaeger (101), Helsingborg, Sweden Jul 23, 2009 Can @ Ölbutikken. Black color with brown head. Roasted malt coffee chocolate. Taste espresso bitter chocolate roasted malt. Best caned beer. dankman38 (228), Somewhere in, Ohio, USA Jul 14, 2009 Wow, fantastic beer. Pours thick and black as night with almost no head. I’m noticing lots of chocolate and a hint of coffee on the nose. Chocolate, malt, coffee and a tiny hint of hops finishing very smooth and well balanced. I will drink this beer again and I’ll do it alone, I refuse to share something this good with people who won’t appreciate it. changeup45 (782), Orlando, Florida, USA Jul 14, 2009 This pours black with brown edges and a thin filmy head that barely starts to develop before disappearing completely. The aroma is quite complex, oats, roasty malt, coffee, pine, molasses, I pick a lot up and it’s all blended quite well. This is creamier and softer than expected with some flavors not picked up in the aroma. Smoked wood, chocolate, dark fruit and the piney hops provide some bitterness. Wow, very smooth with very little alcohol showing and what’s there works well within the overall flavor. Great beer. FlyingTaco (112), Massachusetts, USA Jul 9, 2009 Original review date 3/29/2008...Deep, dark, Texas Tea espresso/Jolt cola-color with thick, compact dark maple walnut/praline head and great lacing.
Heavy alcoholic tinge with tinny tones of earth, slate, grassy hops and double-roasted coffee and malt - a little unbalanced; not quite beautiful chemistry but blown away nonetheless
Wow. Burnt espresso, heavy ring of bitterness from coffee and hops. Mild sweetness - abundance of everything and way over the top.
Finishes very thick with nice, harsh coffee tingle.
This one’s for quality, not quantity. Sip, savor and enjoy in moderation.
tarheels86 (705), Washington DC, USA Jul 8, 2009 Can. Pours an opaque black with a deep tan, one finger head that has good retention and leaves some good lacing. Aroma is black licorice, cherry Twizzlers, maple and brown sugar oatmeal. Taste upfront is oily and velvety on the palate with chocolate milk, espresso gelato but then goes to dry, bittering hops and ends with a long, dry, roasted barley and raw cocoa finish. Not a super outstanding impy but the best beer on the planet that comes out of a can so that deserves some bonus points. elgiacomo (64), Ringgold, Georgia, USA Jul 3, 2009 12oz. can. Pours black, literally like used motor oil. Blackest, thickest substance I’ve ever seen come out of an aluminum can. Small dark brown head. Some lacing, but very temporary, doesn’t stick to the glass. Aroma is dark roasted malts, cofee, and some chocolate. Flavor is heavy on the chocolate with some coffee, roasted malts, and a bit of the hops rearin’ their head, and is also long-lasting. This year’s is less chocolaty than the previous year’s. Low carbonation, thick and rich. A top-notch imperial stout. I’ve bought a number of 4-packs over the past year and will definitely buy more. Enjoying this one along with a Hershey bar and they’re a great combo!
