A rich and robust stout. The addition of black treacle gives intense depth and roasted malts impart a coffee flavour. Generous amounts of hops add a dry citrus finish to this complex black ale.

500ml bottle. Rather fittingly, the colour is that of dark molasses, and it pours with a pale caramel head. The aroma is burnt cinder toffee. Soft and rounded texture, with flavours of burnt malt and smokey honey. This stout is pleasingly flavoursome, and pairs well with cake.

Cask tried. Rating bottle. Dark brown ale with red hints. Thick tan head which lasts and lasts. Nose is really nice quality treacle toffee, with a little charcoal in there. Taste is rich coffee, mixed with treacle - a really rich bitterness throughout the ale, but a nice finish which means you go back for more more more. Class.

Half at "meet the brewer" Central bar Gateshead. Best beer of the session. Dark brown with a tan head. Strong coffee and treacle, thick and toasty. Lovely stuff.

Bottle. Chocolate dominates with a full body and small head. Liquorice is also pleasant. Interesting and informative label. A very pleasant stout.

UPDATED: JAN 5, 2013 1) Bottle. Caresses the nostrils with coffeeish roast, hopsack musk (Cluster), cocoa and liquorice. Smoky and bittersweet, but mostly bitter. Clinging burnt finish. Bonfire and silk. Chewy dark fruit in the middle, vanishing liquorice. Treacle way back in the mix. Thick black satisfier with a beige collar. Creamy but attenuated, lip-smacking interplay of smoke and hop. Yeah. 2) Cask, Hop, Sheffield, 01/01/13. Cream capped mahogany. Milky coffee, herbal hop traces, bell pepper, grassy aroma. Soft and creamy with toffee, shrub and honey, roasted nut hints. Nice blend of hop and mellow roast. Pretty good. 737314.

Bottled. A black stout with a thin off white head. The aroma has coffee and blackcurrant cough sweets together with sweet licquorice. The taste is dry and roasty. The sticky sweet treacle is noticeable in the flavour and gives the beer a rich mouthfeel. A pretty good sweet stout.

A Sim rate (Winter Beer Fest): Aroma of caramel, ginger, bit of apple, serious maple syrup and of course, treacle. I could smell this all day! Nice dark appearance that’s not quite opaque. Glorious flavour. Same notes as the aroma, but with extra nuts. Quite a bitter finish. Very very enjoyable.

Cask at the Euston Tap. Dark brown with a foamy, white head. Good roasty nose, light coffee. Lightly sweet flavor, tobacco, dry roast, mild char and chalk. Light to medium in body with fine to average carbonation. Finishes mildly sweet with plenty of tobacco roast. Very nice.
