4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 dogbomb (632) - ENGLAND - DEC 1, 2012
Cask tried. Rating bottle. Dark brown ale with red hints. Thick tan head which lasts and lasts. Nose is really nice quality treacle toffee, with a little charcoal in there. Taste is rich coffee, mixed with treacle - a really rich bitterness throughout the ale, but a nice finish which means you go back for more more more. Class.

A Sim rate (Winter Beer Fest): Aroma of caramel, ginger, bit of apple, serious maple syrup and of course, treacle. I could smell this all day! Nice dark appearance that’s not quite opaque. Glorious flavour. Same notes as the aroma, but with extra nuts. Quite a bitter finish. Very very enjoyable.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 DruncanVeasey (6116) - NUNEATON, Blue Square Premier, Warwickshire, ENGLAND - OCT 12, 2007
UPDATED: JAN 5, 2013 1) Bottle. Caresses the nostrils with coffeeish roast, hopsack musk (Cluster), cocoa and liquorice. Smoky and bittersweet, but mostly bitter. Clinging burnt finish. Bonfire and silk. Chewy dark fruit in the middle, vanishing liquorice. Treacle way back in the mix. Thick black satisfier with a beige collar. Creamy but attenuated, lip-smacking interplay of smoke and hop. Yeah.
2) Cask, Hop, Sheffield, 01/01/13. Cream capped mahogany. Milky coffee, herbal hop traces, bell pepper, grassy aroma. Soft and creamy with toffee, shrub and honey, roasted nut hints. Nice blend of hop and mellow roast. Pretty good. 737314.

Bottled. A black stout with a thin off white head. The aroma has coffee and blackcurrant cough sweets together with sweet licquorice. The taste is dry and roasty. The sticky sweet treacle is noticeable in the flavour and gives the beer a rich mouthfeel. A pretty good sweet stout.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 TheGrandMaster (2335) - Auckland, NEW ZEALAND - OCT 26, 2008
UPDATED: DEC 24, 2008 Bottle (in NZ), pours a ruby-tinted black with a creamy beige head. Roasted malt on the nose, coffee, and a sweetness akin to some whiskeys. Overly sweet roasted malt on the palate, but becomes more dry and bitter in the swallow. Tobacco and aniseed in the finish. Re-rated - lighter this time, with more coffee flavour. Very easy to drink.
