COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Otaru Pilsner is a deep golden-colored beer which is bottom fermented just like the pilsner beers produced in Pilsen back in the mid 1800's. This was the first beer to be produced which was clear and golden. It was so inspiring to the people of the area and later the world, that the clear glass beer mug came to replace the ceramic mug which was typical throughout the world. The production of Otaru Pilsner very closely matches the production methods used so long ago in Bavaria. The main points being very cold fermentation and lagering over a very long period of time. The long fermentation period at very cold temperatures provides for a very smooth beer with a very compact, dense head of foam. During this time the yeast gradually drops to the bottom of the tank which makes it unnecessary to filter. Otaru Beer's Pilsner, just like the pilsner beers of long ago still contains lots of happy yeast in each and every bottle and keg!

Bottle. Okay grassy nose, slight corn note. Hazy light straw color. Light sweet malty initial / mild hopping and some grainy touches, too. Okay. Small malt stuff. The hopping doesn’t really add much.

Tap at Beer Horn. Golden colour, crazy horn glass, white bubbly head. Aroma is grainy, floury. Taste is decent, refreshing, good graininess, light creamy sweetness, nice. I was a bit toasted at this stage, but liked it.

Tap at the horn. This is the kind of beer that a bottle wouldn’t do justice to. Great mouthfeel - soft but brisk bittering. Well nuanced and very drinkable. Top pils.

Tap at Leibspeise, Sapporo fall 2009. Golden, creamy layer, low carbonation. Chewy. Light diacetyl. Flour note. Sticky aftertaste.

Bottle. Pale golden with a decent head. Good bready and grassy hop aroma. Bready flavours, hints of spices. Quite alright pilsener.

UPDATED: JUN 14, 2009 Draught at the brewery tap in Sapporo. Golden color with a tall, foamy head. Big bubbles. Aroma of fruit and hops. Full malt flavor. Light, clean flavor. Good hops. Very tasty, round, and slightly buttery. Dry, hoppy finish. Excellent. Great hops.

Draft at Otaru taproom under TV Tower in Sapporo: Golden color, fluffy white head, the nose is perfumey with some light noble hops and a touch of rice and malt. The flavor is a bit thin, with some light toasty notes in the tail and a thin tinny mouthfeel. Not the best pilsner I’ve had here in Hokkaido, but certainly above par.

My Bottom Line:
This Pilsener’s intricate hop fan displays spicy, citrusy herbs to freshen the hefty crunchy straw. Gorgeous body, slender curves, intriguing perfume...pleasurable nights ahead.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-Great foam sits atop the pale golden.
-Balance is achieved even in the finish, as dry, herbal, grassy lengths meet with crisp cereals.
-A little sulphur note bothers on tap.
-Pillowy carbonation helps the mouthfeel.
-The bottled version wasn’t as excellent, but still satisfied greatly; the body is a little thinner, carbonation bigger bubbled, but the flavor and finish are just as great.

On tap at the brewery restaurant, and from the bottle.

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2008 I originally gave this beer a 1.6, as I bought a bottle in Tokyo and Otaru beer clearly doesn’t travel well. At the brewery, this had a full on floral nose with toasted malts. Hoppy start, but then becomes more balanced. A bit sweeter than I was expecting. Moderately bitter finish. Excellent on draft at the brewery.

[Bottled] Hazy pale yellow, rich head. Distinct grassy nose. Dry and freshly malty with soft mouthfeel. Bready malt together with newly mown grass makes up most of the flavour. Lingering bitter finish. More similar to the softer south German pilseners than the drier and crisper north German ones.
