Cask conditioned handpump Wenlock Arms London 16/05/12. A near black beer with a ruby hue and an off-white head. Great grapefruity hops in the nose which carry through to the mouth where they are joined by roasty malts. A very tasty beer with great depth of flavour and bitterness. Unlike a lot of BIPAs, the taste exceeds the aroma.

Bottle. Black beer with a strongish light brown coloured head. The aroma is roasted with a touch of yeastiness, and the flavour is quite bitter with heaps of bitterness, some coffee, and yeastiness. Overall a nice beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

50cl bottle at home from beerritz, uk. Body is nearly black, head is small, beige, creamy, mostly lasting, good lacing. Nose is fruity light roasty, flavor is dark chocolate, toffee, coffee, dried fruits. Light sweet, medium to heavy bitter. Finish is long lasting heavy dark chocolate bitter, later mostly hoppy. Full body, thin texture, average carbonation. Excellent easy dessert beer, simple but very tasty.

Bottle from Saucy Pears. Appearance - opaque with a lovely lacy fawn head. Nose - chocolate and marmalade. Taste - hard yellow cheese, then chocolate, then quite bitter orange and dark malt. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy texture and a long dry finish. Overall - it did the black bit, but it didn’t quite do the IPA bit for me.

Creamy light chocolate aroma with roasty notes. Black with a nice cappucino head. Mouthfeel is silky, thick and soft with a creaminess and the flavour is milk chocolate, roast chocolate, subtle hints of freshly ground coffee and very light hoppy notes introducing a peppery spice flavour. Really, really good. The only criticism I have is that there is the slightest metallicity to the aroma and flavour, reminiscent of some what I call; ’Supermarket beers’. I don’t think that these are bottle conditioned, which would be better and would probably allow the flavours to shine to the maximum extent. Here they seem ever so slightly sedated by something.

On a blind tasting, I would have this a a stout or porter. Nice mildly smoke malt on the taste, with a bitter finish.
