Internationally recognised beer writer Melissa Cole visited us last month to brew an exciting new speciality beer with Matthew Otley. The beer a 4.6% abv golden speciality ale was officially launched on Friday 11th June at the GWBCF in Cardiff International Arena. Melissa named the beer at the unveiling as Thai Bo, a respectful nod to its influences that inspired it.
Infused with Lemongrass, lime leaf and galangal it has been described as having the aromas of a Thai green curry in a glass. The flavours make this an ideal summer beer as the clean refreshing flavours cut right through to quench your thirst and tickle your palette, it has been a big hit also with female drinkers as they describe it as being a beer that they like to drink. We think this beer will be making a return soon as a new monthly seasonal, but if you fancy giving it a try, hurry, we have a limited amount of casks available from this single brew, so call us to secure one of the most striking beers to come out of our brewery this year.

Cask, handpump at The Commercial & Victoria Hotel, Leeds, W.Yorks 18.03.12 in company of dad & Barry Pours gold with a white head. The nose is rather subtle in fact that subtle I donít get much at all. Light fruity refreshing beer with a middling bitterness, I assumme that this has some Thai influence but Iím afraid that it has rather bypassed me, itís still a decent beer though. Cask at the newly opened Craft beer co in London. Hazy yellow straw appearence. Interesting aroma slightly citrus earthy. The flavour is adjunct forward with the lime leaves for me being the stand out flavour. I did not pick out the lemongrass. The hop character of this reminded me of the sorachi ace single hop beer ive had, although Iím not sure which hops they used. This beer was very refreshing and sessionable.

Cask conditioned handpump Lyric London 30/05/13. A yellow blonde beer with a white bubbly head. An oddity for sure. Coriander, lemongrass and a little heat. The spicing is OK but it just all seems a very unnecessary experiment of a beer. Iíd rather drink a Belgian Wit which this is just about hinting at I reckon.

Cask-conditioned at the Star, Talybont 07/09/10. Pale gold with a slight white head. Aroma dominated by the lemongrass, with a touch of sweetness and floral hop. Spicy flavour, with lots more lemongrass before a dry finish. A bit overpowering.

Small very white creamy head. Slightly hazy yellow body. Spicy sandalwood and lemongrass aroma with fruity notes. Dry-sweet intensely spicy sandalwood, ginger and lemongrass taste with mealy fruity notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft, mealy mouthfeel. Dryish, almost bitter, fruity gingery dandelion aftertaste with strawy dusty notes. (0.284l cask at Brigantes, York.)

A Mes rate. Cask at the Southampton.
Hazy yellow with a faint greenish tinge. Pleasant dusty hop snout with a good dose of lemon. What makes the aroma enjoyable is sadly the same thing that makes the flavour not so great. Lots of lemon and coconut, some spice and a little flat otherwise. Good bitterness in the finish but itís not really enough to save it. Interesting and it certainly gets plus points for doing something different but itís just not my thing.

On tap at Southampton Arms. Strong lemongrass flavour, pleasant blond beer base. But it is more flavour/perfume than beer.

On tap @ the Haymarket Bar. Pours golden with fairly proportionate head. The nose has sweet egg and lemon grass. The taste has coconut and nutmeg. The palate is medium bodied and structured with a fresh finish. While not world beating this beer definitely is of an individual personality.

Light blonde with noticeable galangal and subtle lime on the nose. The lime on the palate helped to cool the spicy chilli of the noodles and a spicy malt finish with a hint of the bubblegum/hay/tangerine flavours from the sorachi ace hops.

Cask by handpump at Bon Accord, Glasgow - clear yellow, thin off-white head, weak sweet malty and herbal aroma, patchy lacing, sweet, some flavour a bit like coconut I donít recognise, very easy to drink, unusual
