2.8 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
Fresh bottle purchased and consumed at the brewery in Aug 2014: Luminous pale golden. Fat, sticky and lathery foam exhibits stellar retention. Unappealing aroma of DMS, metal and apple juice. Subtle notes of licorice Spalter, hay, minerals and flowers. Very soft and creamy carbonation. One-dimensionally haylike and toasty, with a muted zesty hop bitterness to follow. Woody depth and mild lemony flavors emerge beneath the deep oiliness. Potent scratch of minerals mirrors the pronounced, overly toasty pils malt. Touch of concrete and gravel exacerbate the increasingly coarse, unrefined malt. Negligible hoppy brightness aside from fleeting lemon which soon succumbs to the raw malt aspects. Finishes dry and floral but timidly hoppy with a Spalter-induced herbal sharpness that fails to clean up the emerging apple notes which mar the aftertaste. A very simple and fairly unclean Frankenpils that’s shy on hops. The appearance, however, is a thing of beauty.

2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle looks very simple, almost like a cheap beer. Beer in the glass zippy, nice head. Starts mild, modest dry, malty background. More and more metallically and sourish. Finish drier, less malty. Okay, but nothing special.

UPDATED: OCT 14, 2014 Bottle had in November 2012, best by date February 2013.
bright gold body with a small white head. strangely apple-heavy nose with some light solvent, dry wall powder, apple skin tannin flavor, solvent-like acids are mild but present enough to be bothersome. can’t say this one ranks among the better from Franconia, though recommended highly by a very talented brewer I believe this may be in better shape at the source. lightly acidic medium bitterness, mostly dry. vitamin heavy and husky finish and sourish mint.
Draft at the brewery was in better shape, bitter, mostly clean, a little malty, but still not that deep. 3.2-3.4 level (drinkable).
