4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours black/dark brown with an off-white, almost tan, frothy head. Persistently sticky lace.
Aroma is sweet, fruity hops. Tropical fruit and floral aroma. Mango, pineapple, and citrus. Little pine in the background but dominated by a tropical scent.
Very hoppy. Taste is less juicy and more bitter than the aroma indicated. Still, quite sweet. Tropical flavors persist, but citrus is most dominant. Sweet malt flavors (subtle molasses) back up the hop. Syrupy and sticky texture and the carbonation is a little sharp.

This is quickly becoming my favorite style and this beer is a good representation of quality. Nice smooth mouthfeel and palate with a kick of hops that s not overwhelming. Great.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 16/20
Strong aroma of pine. Cola brown, thin tan head. Dark roasted malt and pine. Fizzy with a charred oak finish. Nicely rustic and woody. The hop varieties used go very well with the roasted malts. Great camping beer!

12 ounce bottle from Downtown Wine & Gourmet, Harrisonburg, VA, opened 1/10/11. Pours a dark brown color with a medium light brown creamy head. Decent head retention and lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, nutty notes and earthy bitter hops. The taste is citrus hops, caramel, lightly roasted malts. Medium bodied. Pretty good.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Looking at it, you can tell why they named it the Black IPA; it is an opaque black with a little bit of tan head. Hops define the aroma, giving is a sharp citrusy smell, accompanied by hints of spices. Taste has a soft bitter kick in the middle that lingers for a long finish. The medium body is slick, and as the weak head indicates it doesn’t have much carbonation. Overall a great, warm, beer for the winter that stands out from other seasonals.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a dirty, poop water brown with a small sudsy light tan head that fades. Nose is pretty weak, some hops and roasted hops but neither is too pronounced or well rounded. Flavor is a bit more existent, yet still lacking the finesse of some of the better examples of the style. Slightly watery and astringent mouthfeel and finish.

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours a dark black with some light on the edges. Nose is green and hoppy, definitely hoppy. ind of off with a mild coffee character. Flavor kind of falls short, astringent palate. Green and grassy with lots of bitterness. Note much dark grain character save for maybe the astringency. Bleh

3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Body is almost black with a thin beige head. Aromas are reminiscent of a little chocolate mixed into that flowery smelling soap that your crazy aunt always had in her wallpapered bathroom you used when you visited her house on holidays. As it warms a bit, a light pine aroma helps diminish my dismay at the flowery mess and the chocolate picks up steam as well. Still, my hopes are that this is the true nature of the beast, not that god-awful first impression. Flavor is a revelation and my prayers have been answered. Chocolate and slightly stinging pine and resin dominate, with just a bit of aunt Millie’s soap at the very end, but you can chose to almost completely ignore it if you want. It still comes across as a bit washed out at times, but this is pretty decent stuff and I would gladly have another.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a frothy tan head and aromas of pine and very light chocolate. Flavor is a pretty mild mix. The dark malt and piney hops are good, but there is an odd sweetness that is pretty floral (and I’m talking about hibiscus and rose here) that washes things out a bit. Solid, but not great.

Draught from Spring Lounge. Poured a subtle dark, not a lot of head. Nice roastiness and hoppiness. I really like this style.
