The Alpine Black IPA made its debut at the Vermont Brewers Festival in Burlington, Vermont in July 2010. It was intended to be a one-off pilot batch and quickly evolved into an instant favorite. To appease demand we have decided to release it as our new Otter Creek Winter Seasonal. Those who attended the VBF were lucky to get a sneak tasting of this incredible brew. Since then it has been the buzz around town.

Description: “Dark in color and character, this unfiltered Black IPA exudes caramel and roasted notes while highlighting a bold hop bitterness and citrus aroma. Apollo, centennial, and citra hops intermingle with the deep complexities provided by copious amounts of caramel malts and de-husked roasted barley.”

Pours a dark black with some light on the edges. Nose is green and hoppy, definitely hoppy. ind of off with a mild coffee character. Flavor kind of falls short, astringent palate. Green and grassy with lots of bitterness. Note much dark grain character save for maybe the astringency. Bleh

MrBunn (2461) - The Wet Side of a Dry Town, Pennsylvania, USA - JAN 9, 2011
Bottle. Body is almost black with a thin beige head. Aromas are reminiscent of a little chocolate mixed into that flowery smelling soap that your crazy aunt always had in her wallpapered bathroom you used when you visited her house on holidays. As it warms a bit, a light pine aroma helps diminish my dismay at the flowery mess and the chocolate picks up steam as well. Still, my hopes are that this is the true nature of the beast, not that god-awful first impression. Flavor is a revelation and my prayers have been answered. Chocolate and slightly stinging pine and resin dominate, with just a bit of aunt Millie’s soap at the very end, but you can chose to almost completely ignore it if you want. It still comes across as a bit washed out at times, but this is pretty decent stuff and I would gladly have another.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown with a frothy tan head and aromas of pine and very light chocolate. Flavor is a pretty mild mix. The dark malt and piney hops are good, but there is an odd sweetness that is pretty floral (and I’m talking about hibiscus and rose here) that washes things out a bit. Solid, but not great.

Draught from Spring Lounge. Poured a subtle dark, not a lot of head. Nice roastiness and hoppiness. I really like this style.

Bottle. Brown with some tan head. Aroma is hoppy, grassy and herbacious. A bit of malt on the palate but was expecting a bit more, also some more grassy hops. A bit too grassy and not enough malt to balance it out in my opinion, not too bad though.

Sampled at st/line tasting 12-9-10. Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of pine&citrus hops with a hint of coffee and a touch of earthiness. Flavor of coffee, pine, citrus, and some light caramel.

This is a very unique beer style (at least for me) It is rather light in mouthfeel with a slightly toasty flavour not found in most IPAs, but more in Porters. But the hops, they shine!

Bottle. Poured clear black color with an average frothy light brown head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted malt and hop aroma. Medium body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Moderate to heavy toasted bitter flavor with a moderate to heavy bitter finish of medium duration. Very good brew that I would recommend to a freind.

12oz bottle. Small creamy beige head atop brown-black body. Aroma is medium sweet, roast, some grapefruit, caramel, light bittersweet chocolate. Taste is medium sweet, roast, some grapefruit/pine, caramel, milk/bittersweet chocolate. Light-medium body, fairly drinkable.

Dickinsonbeer (5077) - Hoboken, New Jersey, USA - DEC 28, 2010
Tap at BBD 2010. Pours a hazed yet very dark brown near black some spotty hop particle floaties and a massive off beige head- lasting and great head. Aroma is pine dank hops, lots of big grapefruit citrus and tangerine zest over a nutty roasty slightly chocolaty backbone. Flavor is light roast, dark chocolate, nuts, earth leather then citrusy hops, some pine, orange, big citra and centennial hop character. Smooth finish. Nice!
