The Alpine Black IPA made its debut at the Vermont Brewers Festival in Burlington, Vermont in July 2010. It was intended to be a one-off pilot batch and quickly evolved into an instant favorite. To appease demand we have decided to release it as our new Otter Creek Winter Seasonal. Those who attended the VBF were lucky to get a sneak tasting of this incredible brew. Since then it has been the buzz around town.

Description: “Dark in color and character, this unfiltered Black IPA exudes caramel and roasted notes while highlighting a bold hop bitterness and citrus aroma. Apollo, centennial, and citra hops intermingle with the deep complexities provided by copious amounts of caramel malts and de-husked roasted barley.”

Bottle. Dark black color. Malty palate. More malty than hoppy taste and aroma. Doesnt taste like ipa at all. Good beer, but nothing like an ipa

Pours a deep, dark brown with a creamy off white head which lingered......aroma of slight coffee......taste is coffee, burntness, with avery smooth mouthfeel ending in even bitterness and slight metallic finish.

Black IPA’s rock! It’s the best of both worlds – roasted flavors & hops. Delightfully bitter hops up front, backed with bitter roasted malt. Smooth, rich, tons of flavor all around, and even manageable alcohol to boot. A pert near perfect beer.

Aroma: Toasted malt aromas with hints of floral hops. Appearance: Black with tan head. Taste: Light sweetness balanced by a light bitterness. Palate: Medium body, slick texture, soft carbonation, sweet finish. Overall: Nice flavors and good balance, but not mind blowing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

black color; citrusy hops and roasted malt aroma; a bitter, hoppy beer; citrusy hops on a dark, roasted malt base

Citrus caramel roast hop nose. Black bod with a caramel tinge around the edges. Crisp roasted caramel taste with a sweet malt background. Has an apple-like crispness. Leaves a refreshed sweet taste with a hint of smokiness.

Dark pour, tan head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, maybe some citrus. Probably orange peel. Flavor is big in the porter character due to the cocoa and malt. Finishes lighter and more carbonated. Roast all the way through.

Inky black pour without any real head on it. Aroma is mainly malt and coffee with a little bit of pine from the hops. The flavor is surprisingly sweet with plenty of coffee, a little licorice and some citrus hop joining the pine. Fairly bitter lingering into the aftertaste. Thick and incredibly smooth, great aftertaste. On the plus it’s a more reasonable abv than a lot of other black IPAs, it’s a style that tends to get boosted up too high.

Bottle from Bo Brooks’ Lighthouse Liquors, Baltimore. Near black, with a frothy, off-white, head. Big, plain chocolate character, some toasted malts and plenty of hops in the finish. Good.

Poured from 12oz bottle. Unremarkable take on this trendy style. Very middle of the road without and pop in either side of the fence here. Decent roastiness with a lacking hop bite for an ipa. --you've been Dubbed.

This black beer came with a large tan head and good lacing. Aroma of roasted malts and coffee, some sweetness and modest hoppiness. Flavors were more balanced as the earthiness of the malts worked well with the floral, herbal hops. Aftertaste was dry and moderately bitter. Medium bodied mouthfeel with average carbonation and a lingering finish.
