COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Alpine Black IPA made its debut at the Vermont Brewers Festival in Burlington, Vermont in July 2010. It was intended to be a one-off pilot batch and quickly evolved into an instant favorite. To appease demand we have decided to release it as our new Otter Creek Winter Seasonal. Those who attended the VBF were lucky to get a sneak tasting of this incredible brew. Since then it has been the buzz around town.

Description: “Dark in color and character, this unfiltered Black IPA exudes caramel and roasted notes while highlighting a bold hop bitterness and citrus aroma. Apollo, centennial, and citra hops intermingle with the deep complexities provided by copious amounts of caramel malts and de-husked roasted barley.”

Black IPA’s rock! It’s the best of both worlds – roasted flavors & hops. Delightfully bitter hops up front, backed with bitter roasted malt. Smooth, rich, tons of flavor all around, and even manageable alcohol to boot. A pert near perfect beer.

You can smell the roasted malts reminiscent of a porter or stout but with citrus and some pine undertones from the hops. Taste is even better with that roasted chocolate almost coffee like malt with the leafy earthy hops coming together. It ends with the citrus and slightly piney bittering hops that mixes in so well with the malts. Very well crafted beer.

loved it. Clean fresh pine from North American forests in late fall. thick enough to deserve the black color. refreshing and substantial and a sensory overload.... Without any gimmick, Thank you. a bitter brew with just a touch of sweetness and citrus. On tap at Gingerman NYC. Lingering finish unbalanced and smooth it is represented by some roasted barley. Addictive, Fragrant and beautiful.

Into an Otter Creek English pub glass. Black/dark brown. Great pour with creamy head, off-tan. This beer smells like the woods--lots of pine from the hops. Low on citrus, more of an earthy bouquet. As far as taste experience, this is like an IPA that transforms into a stout: you get hit with the bitters at first, but the finish is dark chocolate and roasted malt. Nice lingering bitterness on the tongue. Really liked this when I tried it in Vermont, and it’s as good as I remember it. The whole CDA/black IPA thing seems to be catching on and this is a fine example.

Pours black/dark brown with creamy head, off-tan. I smelled a lot of pine and not a lot of citrus...more earthy. I really liked the taste of dark chocolate in the finish with roasted malts. Very enjoyable beer.

This is a very unique beer style (at least for me) It is rather light in mouthfeel with a slightly toasty flavour not found in most IPAs, but more in Porters. But the hops, they shine!

Great winter beer. Very full taste, but is more like a porter/stout than an IPA.

Aroma= Black. You can’t even see through this when put up to a light. Nice yellow/tan tint to the foam. Smell = earthy, malty, with a hoppy background note to the smell Taste = Tastes just like it smells but with a hint of fruitiness that I couldn’t make out in the smell. This isn’t a traditional "IPA" in the amount of hoppieness to the flavor. It is amazingly well balanced to be such a dark beer. Starts with an earthy maltiness and goes to a full flavor full of spices and a bit of fuitiness as it fills your mouth, and ends with the floral/hoppy notes at the end. Mouthfeel = smooth yet full bodied Overall = This is a great alternative to a stout. If you drank this blind folded, you wouldn’t know it was a black beer.

Citrus caramel roast hop nose. Black bod with a caramel tinge around the edges. Crisp roasted caramel taste with a sweet malt background. Has an apple-like crispness. Leaves a refreshed sweet taste with a hint of smokiness.

what a great black ipa. exactly what it should be, a wonderfully delicious balance between the hops and the roasted malts, either a roasty ipa or a hoppy porter, dont know and dont care, this is just a great beer.
