4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Otter Creek is a brewery that’s really upped their game in the last few years. I wouldn’t consider them trend-setters per se, but when a new style comes along, they’re able to jump on the bandwagon and made a great entry without the pretentiousness of smaller, supposedly artisan breweries. Citra Mantra is their take on the popular IPL style and it works for all the right reasons – looks great, smells, great, tastes great and is easy to drink. What’s not to like?
I poured a 12oz bottle into a footed pilsner glass. It was bottled on 1/22/15 and cost $2.30 ($0.19 per ounce).
Appearance: White gold hue over a very clear body (surprising, since it mentions being unfiltered on the label). Pours to a large, white, fluffy head which laces and retains very well.
Smell: Nothing but hops; herbal notes especially, though some lemon or other citrus character is present. Spicy but clean.
Taste: With the exception of American hops (of the Citra variety, obvious); this beer is actually a fairly traditional German Pilsner brew. Compare it to BJCP style 2A and you’ll see it hits on pretty much every point. Clean, crisp maltiness at the base without any residual sweetness and no esters or flaws, either. But instead of Noble hops, which tend to be spicy, Citra hops create for a citrus/spicy taste sensation. Lemonpeel is quite prominent immediately, with a dry spiciness on the finish. Though only 55 IBUs, this is still plenty bitter, but not extremely so. An interesting hybrid of a traditional recipe and contemporary innovation.
Drinkability: Crisp and effervescent like a pilsner, but with the hoppy bite of an IPA. There is some residual startch-like sensation that lingers on the tongue, though the beer is quite refreshing while in the mouth. Otter Creek Citra Mantra is a spring seasonal, though I’d say it would be suitable for year-round release because it’s so easy (and fun) to drink. It’s strong enough to stand up to pretty much any meal, and at 5.75% ABV it’s light enough to drink as a double-header without being overwhelmed.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
12 oz bottle dated 01/02/2015.
Aroma has a light bready malt character and a slight grainy, yeasty note. Large citra hop character with a lot of grapefruit and tropical fruit and a light background resin note. Medium light stone fruit.
Pours a slightly cloudy, pale yellow gold with a big, thick, white head that exhibits really nice retention. High lacing and medium legs.
Flavor has a similar grain and bread backbone with a strong, assertive bitterness. A light butter note is present towards the finish. Moderately strong hop flavors of grapefruit and resin with lighter tropical and stone fruit.
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth.
Overall, a pretty nice beer though I do think I pick up hints of diacetyl. Lots of hop character and seemingly more bitter than the 55 IBUs it claims.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Wonderful citrusy aroma which blends well with the sulfur from the lager yeast. Hazy (fm from the dry hops) gold color. Delicious sharp hoppy beer.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle at home. Aroma of citrus, stone fruits, hay, flowery. Starts out sweet, bitter grapefruity citra hops in the middle, which quickly give way to a sweet finish dominated by a husky grainy flavor. Solid.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass
Appearance – The beer pours a hazed light amber color with a one finger head of pure white. The fizzy head fades very fast leaving only a light level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the beer is heaviest of a grainy smell mixed with some grapefruit citrus and some lemon aromas. Along with these aromas are some light caramel smells as well as a bit of a grassy and floral smell.
Taste – The taste begins with a drier cracker taste with a good dose of a grassy taste. There are just some hints of sweet citrus upfront with them fading rapidly from the taste, leaving a quite dry taste overall. Along with the loss of the light sweetness, a grapefruit hop flavor mixed with some lemon grows stronger as the flavor moves on toward the end. A hay like taste comes to the tongue as well as some more grass, leaving a rather dry and somewhat green but pleasant flavor of grass, hay, and grain to linger on the tongue
Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the averages side in terms of its thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the average side as well. Both are rather nice of the easy drinking and nicely hopped flavors of the brew, making for a crisp and refreshing drinker.
Overall – A nicely hopped and rather tasty brew overall. At only 5.75 % abv it packs a good deal of hop flavor into its modest body. Quite tasty and crisp.

Serving: bottle. Straight cloudy yellow pour with a lasting white head. Nice smelling brew with plenty of orange and tropical notes. Slightly sweet up front but nice balancing bitterness. Lots of citrus and tropical notes on the tongue. Zippy, crisp finish. Highly drinkable. A very respectable offering from Otter Creek.

Draft at WHole Foods Plymouth. Pours hazy straw with off-white head. Nose was pils malt, tangerine, pineapple, honeydew. Tasted juicy, with malt matched by a big hop, grapefruit, pineapple, and mango flavor that was very juicy. Finished hoppy, fruity, and spicy.
