2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle received as a gift. Pours black with a nice tan head. Nose is big roast, charred malt, some dark honey, milky coffee. Flavor is burnt/acrid malt, sweet malt, overly bitter coffee, honey. This lacks subtlety and could really benefit from less burnt character. It hides its alcohol but I’d rather have something boozy and complex than smooth & simple.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Poured into a snifter.
3.0 A: Black color. One finger of frothy medium brown head. Retention is below average and not really any lacing is left.
4.0 S: Bright, potent aroma on this. Tons of molasses and layers of caramel. Chocolate, moderate roastiness, and black cherry fruits. Almost like a gingerbread like doughy/biscuitiness. Very nice.
4.0 T: About the same as the nose. Molasses, caramel, moderate roast, biscuit, chocolate, moderate, yet supple, roastiness.
3.75 M: Heavier medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Pleasantly creamy and smooth.
4.0 D: Well rounded, very tasty brew. Can’t complain.

3.9 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
(Bottle). Well described commercially by the brewer. Deeply roasted flavor with well hidden ABV. This beer would help any soul through the long Russian winter. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

3.8 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Super rich dark brown body with an oily black glow and a nice one centimetre tall deep dark brown head. Aroma of ridiculously strong oatmeal, nuts, earth and coffee with a less assertive prune, milk, chocolate and raisin sweetness throughout. Full-bodied; Rich chocolate and roasted malt notes at first with a surprising amount of carbonation, all with a deep pit fruit sweetness and some pungent anise and licorice notes to finish it off. Aftertaste shows quite the complexity with ranges from burnt to pit fruit sweetness and back to anise and permanent marker all finishing with a vanilla, oak, spice and especially alcohol burning finale. Overall, a nice imperial stout with tons of character and complexity but perhaps still a bit too dark and pungent throughout for me. I had aged my bottle for over 10 months and it still wasn’t long enough. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from New Beer Distributors on 13-July-2013 for US$3.25 sampled at home in Washington on 01-May-2014 as beer #4501 as my 3rd rating out of 3 to celebrate the milestone.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draft at Khyber Pass. Tulip glass. Thick black pour with a small tihht beige head. Tons of great dark roasted malt flavors. Chocolate nibs. Charcoal grill. Burnt caramels. Hints of coffee and dark fruit, but the emphasis is on chocolate and ash. High ABV is well hidden. Smooth finish. Tastes notably less sweet than most Imperial Stouts - and that?s fine by me. Body is creamy enough to fit as a proper Russian Imperial for me - and I?m a stickler to that requirement. Missing some of the more complex flavors that a great Imperial should have, but the notes presented are right on the money. Was not expecting something so good out of this. Pleasantly surprised.

Tasty and very roasty. Good brew as most otter creek is good stuff. Almost stovepipe but apparently higher abv.

3.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Pours opaque black with a medium dark brown head that dissipates fairly quickly leaving good lacing. Aroma is chocolate, roasted malts, a bit of cardboard, anise. Flavor is an improvement, light sweet, medium bitter, roasty, chocolate and rich on the tongue. Lingering bitterness on the finish. Fairly full bodied and creamy. Quite nice in the end.
