2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Bottle gifted by jayhawk73. Thanks Jeff.
The beer appears copper hued, displaying an inch and a half of dense, khaki colored head. Excellent lacing and retention. The aroma brings alcohol, malt, honey, fruity esters, spice. The flavor is sweet and strong, with prominent alcohol throughout. Fruity, boozy, raisins, dates, and just overbearing. These days, there are many fine examples of barleywine and strong ale, with high alcohol content gracefully integrated into the flavor profile. Unfortunately, this is not such a beer. It’s a bit harsh and way too sweet. This is a headache in the making. I think I’ll quit while I’m ahead. Not a repeat for me.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: FEB 21, 2013 Dark auburn color, into a snifter, nice looking pour into a snifter..aroma of syrup, brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, and booze. Taste is cloyingly sweet, warming and has the 12 percent punch..this is an odd offering that just is kind of a mess...

Bottle. I will be completely honest and say that the reason I didn’t crack this one earlier is that I wasn’t very excited about it. You could even say that I had been avoiding it. I mean a twelve percent beer from a brewery with some pretty mixed results in my book... Anyhow, it has been in the back of the fridge for a long time. Hell, the label fell off when I grabbed it off the shelf. At any rate, I entered this ready to cut my losses and chuck it if it didn’t hit a level of quality that I deemed necessary to kill off 12 liver points. Pour is nothing too exciting... It’s the color of a tarnished penny and supports very little head, has lots of yeast floated swimming around in the glass and has aromas of wet cardboard and a little bit of brown sugar. I didn’t think I had a cold, but now I’m wondering. First sip is much more pleasant than I expected. Kind if like a really big sugar bomb barley wine or something. Boozy, sugary and sticky with a heavy ABV kick as it goes down. I take back all of my earlier reservations and complaints. This is pretty good stuff. Kind of wishing I had had the forethought to buy a few more for the cellar. There is just a hint of oxidation, but I would love to have another one in a year or so.
