Otter Creek’s Twentieth Anniversary Ale is a homage to our long-running flagship… Copper Ale. With four times the malts and hops, the traditional flavor is a bigger, bolder and more complex ale that can be savored for years to come. Bottle split with Vi. Pours a dark amber body with light off white lacing. Aroma is bland sweet malts. Mouthfeel is medium to thin but with no real distinct flavors. I was surprised to see that this was 12% but overall it’s a pretty bland brew.

On tap at Kramerbooks Cafe in Dupont Circle. Pours a deep plum color with a creamy tan head. Nose holds big caramel, molasses, port, raspberry, toasted almonds, and vinous notes. Palate is a bit uninteresting. Too middle of the road, but still ok.

UPDATED: NOV 27, 2011 Sampled at Siptemberfest & picked up a four pack at a local bottle shop. Pours a deep mahogany with a thin off white cap that disappears quickly. Sweet caramel aroma, tinged with a good dose of booze. Flavor is rich with caramel as well as plenty of dark fruit and a secondary hop presence. Smooth palate with a good alcohol burn. Low carbonation. Quite nice. Expect to pay $11.99 for a 4 pack.

Poured brown with 2 fingers of head. Aroma of dark fruits, booze, and a bit of earthiness. Taste of strong malts, cherry candy, Toffee, earthy, a bit of raisin and plum. medium to heavy mouthfeel. I’d sip it through the night - it’s certainly no Altbier, but maybe a barley wine crossed with a strong amber.

Pour clear deep amber into a shaker. Off-white head recedes leaving scant sheets. Roasted malt aromas. Sweet toasted raisin bread upfront turning to bitter resin in the lasting finish.

In short: A heavy uber-malty copper beer that drinks relatively easy
How: Tap at Vermont Brewers Festival 2011
The look: Partly cloudy copper body topped by a beige ring of foam
In long: The malty nose is rather timid for a 12% monster. No alcohol fumes, no fruity esters, just a pure cereals nose. Taste is mostly about malts, lots of toffee, burnt caramel, tree bark, notes of tobacco, wooden hops, alcohol well hidden. Body is thick and a bit syrupy. Overall this was rather easy to drink for a 12% beer. Not bad at all, but not exciting either. This was my last beer of the festival and it was enough, I was starting to stagger heavily and the festival staff just didn’t believe me when I said it is because I never got used to the constant rotating of the Earth.

5oz pour at Pizzeria Paradiso in Alexandria VA. Poured a dark copper color, small off-white head. Aroma is malty, touch of earthy hops. Flavor is mostly sweet malts, toasted notes. Alcohol is so well masked I was really surprised to see it listed as "12%" - wow!

Pours a dark copper color with a beige head. Aroma of caramel, bread, and toasted malt with a sweet caramel flavor, bread, and toasted malt. Very big beer!

From the tap poured a dark brown color with a small amount of head. Strong sweet malty flavor with a quick finish.

Tasted on 11/11/11 from a 12oz bottle, not a whole lot of thanks going Ryan’s way for this one. Pours a dark brown/amber with a thin beige head that leaves a ring of lace. The nose is cinnamon potpourri with an interesting vanilla aroma, and malty aromas that range from darkly caramelized to bread and cereal. The flavor is more of the same, with potpourri, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, vanilla, copper penny, and some roasted caramelly bitterness. The body is full creamy with average carbonation, and a long spiced copper penny finish.
