COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Otter Creek’s Twentieth Anniversary Ale is a homage to our long-running flagship… Copper Ale. With four times the malts and hops, the traditional flavor is a bigger, bolder and more complex ale that can be savored for years to come. It features a blend of six malts with German & American hops and is a celebration of Otter Creek’s 20 years of craft brewed ales in Middlebury, Vermont

In short: A heavy uber-malty copper beer that drinks relatively easy
How: Tap at Vermont Brewers Festival 2011
The look: Partly cloudy copper body topped by a beige ring of foam
In long: The malty nose is rather timid for a 12% monster. No alcohol fumes, no fruity esters, just a pure cereals nose. Taste is mostly about malts, lots of toffee, burnt caramel, tree bark, notes of tobacco, wooden hops, alcohol well hidden. Body is thick and a bit syrupy. Overall this was rather easy to drink for a 12% beer. Not bad at all, but not exciting either. This was my last beer of the festival and it was enough, I was starting to stagger heavily and the festival staff just didn’t believe me when I said it is because I never got used to the constant rotating of the Earth.

12oz bottle. Pours a deep brown color with a thick head. Aroma is caramel malt and boozey, with some hop presence. Taste had a deep malty flavor and overpoweringly boozy.

Bottle poured a caramel brown in color with a little off white head. Aroma has licorice, brown sugar, vanilla, sweet perfume, and bitter floral hops. Mouth feel is medium with lower carbonation. Flavor has sweet malts, light chocolate, vanilla, light hops, medium bitterness, and some heat. Smooth for the strength and much enjoyed. Home run for otter creek!

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle thanks to lukaduke. Pours a darker amber color with no head. Aroma has some caramel, roast, licorice, toasted nuts. Taste is sweet and a little musty. Alcohol comes through in the finish. Just a little burn.

Bottle gifted by jayhawk73. Thanks Jeff. The beer appears copper hued, displaying an inch and a half of dense, khaki colored head. Excellent lacing and retention. The aroma brings alcohol, malt, honey, fruity esters, spice. The flavor is sweet and strong, with prominent alcohol throughout. Fruity, boozy, raisins, dates, and just overbearing. These days, there are many fine examples of barleywine and strong ale, with high alcohol content gracefully integrated into the flavor profile. Unfortunately, this is not such a beer. It’s a bit harsh and way too sweet. This is a headache in the making. I think I’ll quit while I’m ahead. Not a repeat for me. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 12-06-2011

UPDATED: FEB 21, 2013 Dark auburn color, into a snifter, nice looking pour into a snifter..aroma of syrup, brown sugar, molasses, vanilla, and booze. Taste is cloyingly sweet, warming and has the 12 percent punch..this is an odd offering that just is kind of a mess...

Bottle. I will be completely honest and say that the reason I didn’t crack this one earlier is that I wasn’t very excited about it. You could even say that I had been avoiding it. I mean a twelve percent beer from a brewery with some pretty mixed results in my book... Anyhow, it has been in the back of the fridge for a long time. Hell, the label fell off when I grabbed it off the shelf. At any rate, I entered this ready to cut my losses and chuck it if it didn’t hit a level of quality that I deemed necessary to kill off 12 liver points. Pour is nothing too exciting... It’s the color of a tarnished penny and supports very little head, has lots of yeast floated swimming around in the glass and has aromas of wet cardboard and a little bit of brown sugar. I didn’t think I had a cold, but now I’m wondering. First sip is much more pleasant than I expected. Kind if like a really big sugar bomb barley wine or something. Boozy, sugary and sticky with a heavy ABV kick as it goes down. I take back all of my earlier reservations and complaints. This is pretty good stuff. Kind of wishing I had had the forethought to buy a few more for the cellar. There is just a hint of oxidation, but I would love to have another one in a year or so.
