I’m not sure this is really bottle conditioned, as there was no sediment, their other beers are pasteurised and no mention of it being bottle conditioned on the label. Pours a dark amber or brown colour and no head at all. At first it has a heavy chill haze but it clears completely half way down. Aroma is fruit malt, caramel. To taste much the same, quite strongly flavoured with sweet malt and a bit of jam, very low carbonation.

Amber, hazy, clearing slowly. Malty aroma. Taste is sweet, strong and full of caramel and bitterness. Utterly delicious and by far the best Otter beer I have tried so far.

Aroma of malt and fruit. Amber color with a great tan head. It persists. Flavor is fruit and malt. Malt persists. This reminds me more of an American brown than an English ESB. Finish is malt, tempered by bitter.

Bottle. Hazy amber with a small head. Aromas are toffee malts with chocolate and earthy hops. Sticky sweet and fruity but not cloying. Flavour are sweet toffee and caramel malts with Autumn fruit. Soft in flavour but everything is well balanced. A good ESB.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Amber coloured with a slim off-white head. No sign of sediment. Aroma of vanilla and caramel with some chocolate notes. Flavours are malty and sweetish; some butterscotch and a nice hoppy finish. Medium to full bodied, very drinkable - I can’t leave it alone! Very good strong ale (strong ale is what it says on the label).

A Mes rate:
50cl bottle from Waitrose. Yum. This is really quite good. Butterscotch and sticky toffee with a hint of vanilla and then some hops in the nose. Very brown coloured body with just a wisp of an off white head which leaves a little lacing. Gentle and sweet malts with some caramel and a very pleasant hoppy finish with just a lick of alchohol and gradually growing sweeter as it lingers. Very nice indeed. The more I drink of this the better it gets. Had to get this rate in quick as this stuff is a sinker. Very pleasantly surprised.

Bottle from Sainsbury’s. Not obviously bottle conditioned, I couldn’t see sediment, but no obvious pasteurisation notes either. Dark amberwith dissipating head. Aroma of caramel, orangey hop, liquorice. Good body, complex finish with hop and liquopricy, choclatey malt.

Cask at The Royal Oak, Lyndhurst-Bank : Amber coloured, nearly no head; vinous fruity nose, some traces of liquorice and alcohol; sweetish-fruity start; sweetish flavour; ending in a bitter-aromatic and sweet finish; a warming, pretty full-bodied and well-rounded brew !
