Copper-brown in colour with a strong aftertaste, although the strength is hidden somewhat by the fruity sweet flavours which are also evident in its aroma.

50cl bottle. Pours a lovely amber with gentle bubbles and a nicely proportioned head some of which remains. The nose has raisins and flour. The taste has flour and toffee this time and chocolate biscuits on the finish. The palate is rich but very tight, then a compact middle section which continues into a long dry finish. Overall, a nice strong bitter.

Bottled 06/05/12. A russet coloured beer with an off-white ring of head. A fruity aroma with sweet and slightly sugary notes. Predominantly malty but the hops are there too and give good fruitiness. A nice long finish. Boozy and tasty.8

tombyars (1344) - Saltcoats, SCOTLAND - FEB 22, 2012
First tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival in May 1995. Cask, gravity dispense. Clear mahogany in colour with a thin white head. Crisp green apples noted in the short aroma. Thin but resiny mouthfeel and poor lacing. Pale malts give a robust digestive biscuit base laden with syrupy sultanas, raisins, dates and maple syrup flavours sweet in the palate. Hop resins give a spicy note to the long dry aftertaste. Malt returns with chocolate orange notes full in the mouth, drier currants and oak cask flavours in at the end. Now this is a ESB and highly recommended.

Vignale (1989) - Malmö, SWEDEN - DEC 7, 2011
Inköpt i England och drucken med ölföreningen. En bra ESB med karamellkaraktär som balanseras av en frisk och fruktig humle med bra bett i beskan.

ALLOVATE (2349) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - OCT 7, 2011
Cask, handpump @ The Bridge Inn, Topsham, Devon.
Dimple glass, perfect full pint, almost spilled it sitting back down. Bright as bright ruddy tinged copper with a wafer of white atop. Mildly sherryish, woody and peaty nose, a little liquorice root. Quite spicy with noticeable alcohol and a lot of dark fell fruit coming through, mild yeasty note late. Complex nose leads straight into the palate. Sweet, a lot of toffee and treacle, sherry notes are well pronounced. Nutty, warm Christmas pudding flavour dominates the palate, the body is full and it penetrates well. Lush bitter burnt fruit, stinging nettles and pine needles on the swallow. Assertively bitter, long long linger mirrors the palate, warming for its modest alcohol. Quite full on, it’s not overly sessionable but makes for a great starter or night cap. Lovely stuff.
