Part of an English Bitter tasting in Ocean NJ on 10/06/2007. Pours a slightly cloudy dark amber, courtesy of bottle conditioning. Aroma is buttery with a definite candy character. The flavor is much the same, with a light insistent sweetness. Hops tend to become more apparent towards the end of the swallow, with the malt dropping off quickly and the bitterness increasing resulting in a long hoppy finish. I could have used a bit less of the candy character in the malt.

I can’t beleive I rated from Mary’s half-empty glass, but I did. Amber beer, white head. Sweet and malty aroma with a very crackery and toasty character. Earthy aroma but with a very low hop rate. Flavour is quite sweet and it doesn’t really have much in the way of balance. Very British malt character but it still seems a bit disjointed to me.

16.9oz bottle-pours a foamy to bubbly tan head and hazy copper/light brown color. Aroma is caramel-medium malt, faint fruit. Taste is sweet caramel-medium malt, secondary fruit, faint metallic hops-slight bitterness. Medium body, soft carbonation. Thanks jwc215 for sharing.

I’m not sure this is really bottle conditioned, as there was no sediment, their other beers are pasteurised and no mention of it being bottle conditioned on the label. Pours a dark amber or brown colour and no head at all. At first it has a heavy chill haze but it clears completely half way down. Aroma is fruit malt, caramel. To taste much the same, quite strongly flavoured with sweet malt and a bit of jam, very low carbonation.

From bottle. Nice toffee-caramel sweet malt aroma, light diacetyl, with some grassy fruity hops. Tea. Nice smooth character. Medium amber-brown clear with a bit of haze, topped with an off-white lacing thin head. Medium watery body with medium-heavy carbonation. Starts fairly sweet with apple skin, light grainy tea, caramel with a bit of toffee and butter. Watery with a bit of acidity. Light grassy-grainy bitterness comes in at the finish, with a smooth nutty bitter after. Not a bad bitter, but maybe a bit too carbonated. Fairly clean.

Clear light brown pour with amber highlights and nearly no head. Aroma of light fruit, light toasted malt and a touch of hops and earthiness. Flavor starts out nice enough, including all of the elements from the aroma. But then I pick up a strange rubbery element that always comes through for me in this style. I don’t know why I continue to try them, since I obviously have something weird going on with my taste buds.
