UPDATED: APR 25, 2011 Cask conditioned handpump High Cross Leicester. A dark mahogany coloured beer with an off-white head and lacing. A smoky, roasty, slightly fruity aroma leads to a similar mouthfeel but with especially good smokiness. A good balanced tasty mild. Score 3.6

Cask - The Glasshouse (JDW), Norwich. Poured mid brown in colour with a very fine, disappearing loose and bubbly beige head. Quite delicate fruity, toasty malt aromas with occasional hints of milk chocolate. Light mid chocolate flavours and a good medium roast tone with an average length dryish roasty bitterness. Soft and a touch oily on the palate and light to medium in body.

Cask. Back of Beyond, Reading. Oh boy was I in for a pleasant surprise when I first tasted this beer! Aroma is lots of milk chocolate, raspberries and sprucey hop undertones. A very nice looking beer, clear and a rich mahogany-brown shade. It has a thin white head which quickly disappears. Mild bitterness with undercurrents of sweetness. Clean on the palate.

A Mes rate. Cask at Baker Street ’Sporks.Dark mahogany but more brown than black and a very good off white head and lace. Plenty of condition in it. This is a bloody excellent mild. Light and fruity on the nose. Really good in the mouth. Hints of coffee and chocolate, roasty and toasty but it’s all just... erm... mild. Faint tartness and mineral notes that remind me of Harvey’s Sussex and that’s nothing to complain about at all. Good earthy malt finish with something slightly herbal in it too. This is a little peach if you ask me. Throughly accessible, effotlessly drinkable and does everything it should do. Took me all of five minutes to down it. I didn’t mean to, I just suddenly realised it was gone. Excellent stuff.

First as a cellar run then hand pulled the next evening at the Moon and Sixpence (JDW) Hatch End. Chestnut brown with a thick creamy unsparkled off white head, in the peak of condition. Everything a good mild should be with delicate malt and just enough hops to balance perfectly. Some toffee and caramel with a hint of berry fruit. Wonderful!

JDW Spring fest - Rochester. A caramel coloured traditional mid 20th C Midlands mild. Some pleasant roasty notes in a soft, easy drinking dark beer with few hops. Nice.

Cask @ Counting House, JDW. Amber colour, off-white head. Aroma of slight roasted malts. Flavour is initially slightly sour malty, fruits. Later subtle and smooth roasted malts. Balanced and sophisticated.

Cask handpull at Westgate, JDW, Mass Spoon Rating. Very dark brown with a thin dark beige head. Ok, that is a good mild. Very good dark malts, not overly roasty, more of a dark fruity mild. Lovely roasty aroma, then some really good berry fruits in the mouth and then a juicy fruity finish. Man this is good. Shows you don’t have to go extreme to make a really good beer. Loved it. The juiciness is outstanding. Black cherry mostly. Bit of blackberry.

Cask, Lord Keeper of the Great Seal, Oadby. Flavours are light roast coffee with chocolate milkshake. Earthy peat notes, too. Flavours are light roast malts with some grapefruit bitterness and... Oh it’s all gone.

Cask at Pilgrims Progress (JDW), Bedford, in Spoons Real Ale Festival ’10. Brown, just off white head. Cocoa aroma. Rather odd citric taste, and that’s just about it. Acceptable, without being particularly exciting.
