Commercial Description:
Jolly Roger himself smoked the malt for this Imperial Stout. This is a massive stout with a huge roasted maltiness and complex smoky, chocolate flavors coming through strong thanks to the gentle handpump and correct cellar temperature.

Bottle purchased at the brewpub and drank a week later. Pours black with a thin light brown head. Malty and smoky aroma with some chocolate. Sweet malt flavor with smoke, chocolate, booze and a sweet chocolate finish. Pretty good now, but will probably be better in a year or so.

11/04/2009: Otto’s Jolly Roger Imperial Stout... Aroma: Dark and semi-sweet chocolate; a hint of vanilla and alcohol, licorice, and char. Appearance: VERY dark brown to nearly black in color; only a beige ring around the edges. Flavor: Chewy dark fruits and heavily malted grain; semi-sweet chocolate; chewy dried licorice; vanilla and even some dry rye bouron-like flavors. Palate: Medium-full body; smooth and slightly slick. Overall: Quite good, although the alcohol definitely pops out more as the beer warms...

Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured a black color with an average frothy brown head that lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate to heavy roasted coffee, licorice and alcohol aroma. Heavy dry licorice bittersweet flavor with a heavy bittersweet and small alcohol bite finish of long duration. Full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a standout beer.

Pours dark brown with dark tan head. Nose is band-aid, campfire, roast, burnt toast, dark chocolate, earth, and some booze. Flavor is same with dark chocolate and smoke dominating somewhat. Finish lingers with somke, roast, and a bit of campfire. Yellow lace all over the glass. A bit off-balance toward smokiness with hop and roast bitterness.

On tap @ Otto’s. Pours black with a small bubbly tan head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee, alcohol and vanilla. Big full sweet flavor with a roasty and hop bitterness and a light alcohol taste. Full body with mild carbonation and a thick creay mouth feel. Very good Imp Stout, lots of hops and an excellent aroma and flavor.

Cask at brewery. Dark brown, light bubbly cream ring with an oily looking surface. Nose has strong alcohol (bourbon), licorice, light chocolate, and an odd smoke/burnt note. Light cardboard for possible oxidation. Flavor has more evident malt presence, still alcohol and licorice, and some minor dark fruit notes that come out of nowhere. Thin chocolate finish that ends quickly. Reminds of a messy GL BA Blackout with a couple of off-notes.
