Commercial Description:
Jolly Roger himself smoked the malt for this Imperial Stout. This is a massive stout with a huge roasted maltiness and complex smoky, chocolate flavors coming through strong thanks to the gentle handpump and correct cellar temperature.

Bottle - Big, dark brown color. Heavy, oasty, smoky aroma dominated by wood, chocolate, and roast with a lot of big scents. Flavor is roasty and smoky with some dark coffee, chocolate, and a tad of licorice. Really nice impy stout that satisfies.

Bottle (RBESG 08): Intensely black; chocolate, cacao in the nose; full bitter-sweet flavour, full bodied, but easy-drinking; lingering, warming chocolatey finish

(Bottle) Pours black. The aroma is of sweet dark berries and chocolate up front with undertones of tobacco, blue and blackberries, molasses, dark bread, coffee and hints of brown sugar. The flavour is medium roasted and medium hoppy bitter with tones of mild molasses, brown sugar, tar, salt liquorice, dark bread and tobacco. The mouthfeel is light oily and smooth with dry finish. Some alcohol warmth is present. Medium to full bodied.

(6/29/08) Bottle sample at RBESG08 grand tasting in Plzen. Black-colored with a brown head. Aroma of heavily roasted malt, some chocolate and alcohol. Sweet flavor with almost burnt malt, dark chocolate and a bit of dark fruitiness. Quite full-bodied.

Nice lightly smokey aroma, a bit like hickory charcoal. Cola and, especially, rootbeer flavors with hints of licorice. 9% ABV is almost totally undetectable. Very nice.

22oz bottle from pantanap - thanks, Kan! Not sure why I was in the mood for this on a 100-degree day, but fuck it. Thick oily pour is scrumptiously inviting. The nose is very big, and I immediately noticed some subtle smoke qualities amidst the chocolate malts. Wasn’t expecting that and it made me lick my lips a bit. Velvet smooth body, nicely integrated flavors of roast malts and smoke, chocolate and vanilla swirl on the finish. Honestly it could pass for a cross between ST Oat and Chokolat, that’s the vibe I was getting. But I don’t want to detract from the admirable craft of Otto’s, who have delivered a very fine imperial stout.

Bottled@RBESG 2008 Grand Tasting
Pitch brown-black, small off-white head. Oaky-vanilla aroma with some licorice in it. Full-bodied. Salt licorice, liquerish palate. Nice vanilla touch. Good balanced and drinkable IS.
